       Madstad Wind Screen
By: Rsquared Date: November 23, 2014, 9:41 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Switching from a 990 to the 690 as my 50/50 exploring bike, I
decided to add a wind screen for the 50% road work. I went with
the Madstad screen. The tilt of the screen is easy to adjust
while stopped and the height has about 4” of up-down
adjustability with an allen wrench. We did about 220 miles today
and I think I’m really going to like it…

The Madstad site seems to only have a version for the 690 Duke (
  HTML http://www.madstad.com/s.nl/sc.7/category.11244/.f
       ). Is that
the one you purchased, and does it fit easily on the 690 Enduro
       R?

Yes, I purchased the one for the 690 Duke and it fits fine. No
       modifications, and easy to install.

Seems to be too big to me IMHO.. Anyone have the KTM wind screen
that retails at like 100$ for comparison? I want a screen but i
don't want something so huge that a low speed tip would
compromise integrity of the screen.. just want some wind blast
reduction... Here's a link to the factory Enduro r unit on eBay

Yeah, it's alot larger than the KTM wind screen. If you use your
690 for hard off-road, then the Madstad is probably not the best
choice. I have a KTM 450 EXC for hard off-raod and I use my 690
more as an Adventure bike, so I wanted a wind screen to keep me
warm if needed. It worked great in low 30 degree temps on a
recent trip to Colorado. And right now, for the Texas summers, I
removed it from the bike. It's easy on and off, so it's
       seasonal.

I just installed the Madstad screen and am ambivalent about it.
It is a perfect windbreaker under 67-70 mph, with virtually no
helmet turbulence (I am 5'10), so it's great for a longer
distance adventure ride. My biggest concern is the severe
instability it causes over 70… the steering suddenly starts to
wobble very aggressively and I have to drop down to 62 mph to
regain stability (I'm on the pre-installed knobbies, and riding
the L.A. freeways which have the rain lines, which don't cause
much wobble normally until I get to 85mph without the screen and
on knobbies) . It is also quite tall, and may be vulnerable in a
rough spill off-road. I will be taking it off for local trips to
the trails (usually 1hr freeway rides for me) as I like
travelling at 75-85 in frequent bursts, and can't deal with the
wicked wobble that this screen induces.
It does an excellent job of blocking 90 of the air pressure at
all speeds. That will be great for commuters cruising under 70
daily, or long distance adventure riders seeking relief from
air pressure and willing to stay under 65 when on knobbies. I
doubt the wobble would be as prevalent if on 17 inch supermoto
       wheels.
