I looked into it and read you have to crack the case open, which
is like performing open heart surgery to a simple feller like
me. They'z bound to be scars. I shivered like I does when its
a little cold out and I realize that I needs to take a whizz,
and then I quickly chickened out on the gearbox mods. I'll keep
working my mods with sprockets. And about that. I always try
to add teeth. If I want more low end grunt, then I add teeth
the the back sprocket. If I want more top-end then I add teeth
to the front sprocket. The reason why is that I figure
sprockets last longer with more teeth. But then I could be full
of crap. Let us know what you find out brother.

Thanks Bartlioni, I've done the teeth increase on the rear
sprocket on several bikes primarily to get more low end grunt
and engine braking for down hill control. Always a bad feeling
going down a 45 degree hill with the back wheel either locked up
due to excessive braking, stalling the engine or engine runaway
due to wrong gearing. Unfortunately the 690 gear box, being a
close ratio box, is a strange beast. Serious off-roaders want to
make 1st gear lower but when back on the bitumen, want 6th gear
to be higher ( 1) to reduce fuel consumption 2) to reduce
vibration. It is strange with so many bike riders making this
observation why KTM don't release an adventure version of the
bike. They could also address the low capacity tank and poor
seat comfort at the same time. I guess they're really not that
interested in selling bikes. I've also done the crankcase split
on several bikes, either to upsize the piston, clutch
resurfacing or case repairs due chain damage due to chain link
failure at speed, so the case splitting does not phase me. But
it would be nice to some has tried this get set and found their
chosen ratios do fix the problem.

Okay, I'm starting to shiver a little less on this gearbox mod
deal. (I whizzed earlier) I still have no first-hand knowledge
of the gear system you described other than to note that they
offer a surface finishing treatment above and beyond the
standard gears they supply for an additional amount to the
insane price for the standard rig. But if you gotta hab it you
gotta hab it. I understand these things perfectly. I ask only
this (deez): That if you do the deal, you will post in
excruciating detail every step you went through to install this
gear set. I'm talking pics of the scoot with its guts hanging
out for all the world to see. We'll keep it within the family
of course. No need to reveal our guts to the outside world
beyond our beloved discussion site.
Right on about KTM needing to offer a serious adventure version
of the incredible 690 engine. I've swapped out tires (50/50)
and added a tooth to the front (16 now) and I'm thrilled with my
690e, but I could be talked into even more bandwidth. I wonder
if the factory gear ratios are a by-product of the EPA mandates
for emission standards down here in the colonies. Pure
speculation. I considered the 1190 Adventure R, and quite
frankly, I'm still considering it a lot with a little smirk on
my face. What if I wuz to sell the Harley and....... But
36mpg mate? Im just not sure I can do it. There's me
self-respect to consider. Oh, and one final thought:
Since none of us appears to have first-hand knowledge of your
original question, I recommend that you call the manufacturer
and tell them what you need, and see if they have answers to
scratch every itch. Can't hurt. And don't forget to ask them
about why a gear set this expensive has an optional surface
treatment that costs even more. Be well and remember: I'm out
there.

There is a thread about it on ADVrider here:

I seems like
a good idea, but I'm not ready yet.

I just can't bring myself to seriously consider it. I keep
getting that shiver as if its a little cold out an I suddenly
realize I need to take a whizz. Besides, I ride 50/50. Since I
went with the 16 tooth sprocket on the front, and discovered
115+, I just don't think there's more that I could wish for. I
do realize your mileage may vary of course. And the KTM 690
Enduro R is the swiss army knife of scoots. If'n I wuz rolling
up and down those 45 degree hills that fardrifter is rolling
over, then my priorities would be adjusted accordingly. But I'm
an old war dog that raises hell on the road, chases deer across
the trails, and laughs maniacally when I go airborne a few
piddly feet into the air. I'm a simple feller with simple
needs. Haul most royal butt, never let a deer get away with
thinking it is smarter than me, and always keep the front wheel
up when I go airborne. Hell yeah! Be well and remember that
I'm out there.

Thanks Maribo that is an excellent link to the Advridersite and
WR gear set topic. I am still in the looking and thinking
phase. Many years ago I thought the BMW 1200GS was the way to
go. I test ridden one and it is a smooth machine and for bitumen
or gravel roads it is a machine that is hard to criticise but if
you're are serious off-roader that the weight (230Kg) is a
constant concern so I've gravitated to a lighter machine in the
600cc capacity and to me the KTM 690R enduro meets most of the
wants and needs. So for me the next step prior to buying one is
to look at the current issues and consider solutions and cost.
I'm not in a rush and I'm curious as to what changes occur with
next year's model. It's a pity that you can't order a bike with
the "options" you want as you can with cars.

I checked this out as well. The idea was great but the cost, if
your like me and can't install it yourself, added to the
purchase price made for big no no :-\
