120/100x18 tire
By: mcrider Date: May 16, 2014, 2:46 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Has anyone put a 120/100x18 tire on their 690? I want to go to
Bridgestone ED77 80/100x21 & ED78 120/100x18, but the rear is
120 mm high. The MT-21 is 112 mm high. I wondering if the ED78
will hit the tank.
Comparing the tires:
Pirelli MT 21 --Stock
90/90x21 90 mm wide, 81 mm high (90 x 90%)
140/80x18 140 mm wide, 112 mm high (140 x 80%)
Bridgestone
ED77 80/100x21 80 mm wide, 80 mm high (100 x 100%)
ED78 120/100x18 120 mm wide, 120 mm high (120 x 100%)

I've been wondering the same thing, but because I want the
Dunlop 606 tire. Anyone?

I wanted a 606 also as it is my favorite on the KLR but I ended
up going with a D908RR
HTML http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tire-catalog/off-road-adventure/dual-sport-adventure/d908-rr/.<br
/> I probably won't put it on for a few hundred miles. I'm goin
g
to replace the front as well with the same tire. I'm just not
fond of the stock front.
Back on subject... the 8mm difference in the tires is only
around 1/3 of an inch. I would be willing to bet it would fit
just fine. However as noted above I won't be the guinea pig
lol.
Hey Rusty as a side note I finally got my thermo switch today so
I'll get that write up done this or next weekend. Depends on
how much work I have to do this weekend.

Yeah, I've been letting that thermo switch sit on the back
burner as well. I look forward to your write up.

I may have got a hint at the answer yesterday. Went on the
Cheeseburger Run yesterday from Sam Houston National Forest to
Yankee's Tavern in Carlos Texas. Just after we started I hit a
very deep rain rut, it went Kboom! My inspection sticker plate
curled under. Need to wash the bike to inspect for tire marks.

I ran 606s on my '04 625 SXC. The front always wash out on
gravel. I bet the same is true for the 690, because they have
almost the same fork angle. On my trial run with the ED77. five
of us were on a very fine gravel road with a hard surface under
the gravel. All the others were having trouble in the corners;
I passed all of them having a good time. The ED77 did great. I
was a convert! 8)

With my WRR, I found that an MT21 up front (for traction) and a
D606 out back (for durability) was a perfect combo.

There is not much difference in regards to the cross section
size between a 140/80x 18 and the 120/100 x18.
There are size differences between brands however. You may find
a 140 in 1 brand being wider than a 140 in another.
Regards the d606, they last well but don't grip well. The front
is especially notorious as a bad gripper. I tried many many
tires for both longevity and grip (in both dual sport and mx
application) over 30+ years of riding. The rubber also works
well on some bikes and not on others...sidewall flex, distortion
over objects such as rocks, roots etc, it all affects the ride.
My choice would be a Kenda 777f as a road legal front for dual
sporting...given you have the dry dusty gravel terrain I have
round here. Lots of rocks as well.
That being said I am now using mx tires full time on the 690 as
I have not intention of using it as a dual sport. My black top
never extends more than about 5 miles.
I use desert tires on the rear. Ed608 is good and tough, so is
the maxis desrt. Don't like the Mich desert...tough but sketchy.
The m12 is pretty good in the brief winter, spring over here.
908 is tough and not bad grip but $$$ in Oz.
I think a big thing is too keep the tires pumped above what I'd
do on an mx or enduro bike...20psi or so. The mass of the 690
tends to flex the rubber more on the rim.

I also really loved the K777 on the front but I tried to order
one for the 690 and was told they are discontinued.

I was told that just recently, and that they had been replaced
by a new tire but I can't remember what it was.
