That's the 1190, which has a much more sofisticated abs system
than our bikes. Go into a corner as fast as you can handle it on
the 690 with the ABS on, and let us know how it works out for
you. Lol. Also, it isn't just about stopping distance offroad.
There are times, especially on a big bike with less steering
lock, that rear wheel steering is the fastest and easiest method
of cornering.
If you read the article you linked carefully, the 1190 was in
offroad mode, which disables the rear brake ABS. I've not had
issues with the front ABS being too aggressive offroad on the
690, just the rear. In fact, while riding two up down engineer
last week, I preferred leaving the abs on, as I didn't have to
worry about losing the front wheel in the rocks with my lady on
the back nearly as much, haha.

I will be my last post on the subject, the fact is I have
grabbed a hand full of ABS controlled brakes on the 690 in deep
sand, gravel, mud and cornering. I grew up from a kid riding
dirt and street bikes without ABS. I was just curious as to what
folks opinions were...looks like instead of getting use to the
new tech most just turn it off because it's different and they
don't trust it, an old school frame of mind. Thanks for the
great comments and opinions! I appreciate the diversity.

Indeed, always good to hear how it works for others. I'm only
27, and a tech nerd. I come from a dirt bike and racing
background. I ride (rode) the expert class in oklahoma xc races.
Mine isn't a fear of the abs it's just that the rear ABS is too
aggressive for me, offroad. I can't get enough lockup out of it
to corner properly. However, if the bike came stock with a way
to enable off road abs, like the 1190, I'd definitely give it
more time. For me and my offroad riding conditions, I've only
found a few places I like enabling it. I love having it to play
with, and to keep me safer in panic situations on the tarmac.

I know the answer is here somewhere, but can someone tell me why
my abs light is off completely? I know I hit the buttons on the
dash at some point, just not sure wtf I did :-\
I just want to make sure that there's nothing wrong and that it
was just user error... it's a 15, if that makes any
difference...
and btw, the abs worked awesome when I had to do a crazy hard
straight line stop when some clown pulled right out in front of
me on the street. haven't had a chance to try it the dirt yet.
i do ride quite a bit moto strictly on tracks, don't think abs
would be very helpful at all...
EDIT: just went and double checked, its on when I start the
bike, turns off when I drop it in gear and start going..

The only time that the ABS light comes on is either when you
start it or if you disengage it and then it will blink - other
than that, it is off most of the time.

ahhh, ok.. I could have sworn mine always stayed on, not
flashing, but just on. I haven't had my bike long at all so i'm
going to assume I was wrong :D
thanks for responding, I feel better now 8)

Just thought I'd weigh in on the ABS discussion. I was in the
same camp as some others; the rear brake seemed pretty
ineffective on unpaved surfaces (gravel, dirt , etc.). However
the front brake was absolutely impressive! This is my first bike
('15 690R) with ABS and I wondered how it would work
off-pavement. I sprang for the KTM Dongle they sell. Now, when I
fire up and take off riding the ABS light does a slow blink. The
rear brake will give full power, even to lock up the rear wheel
if you want. The front wheel is ABS enables. Grab the that front
brake and STOP!! No drama! Knowing how that front end will
behave under heavy braking inspires a lot of confidence. We have
a lot of gravel and dirt in this part of Kansas and I recommend
this setup to anyone looking at the 690.
Just my two cents worth. Everyone have a good day.

Just thought I'd mention that there's a dongle that plugs into
your instrument cluster that disables ABS even if you power off
and back on. Works for 2014. Don't know about 2015.
Personally, I'll pull the three fuses if I go for a serious dirt
ride, but the dongle is an option worth mentioning. Later.

As far as the ABS goes, light dirt use is fine, but as I found
out a couple of weeks ago, when you get it on a truly big trail
(like the 717 nearby) and your going down a two or three story
hill at a 45 degree angle and the engine stalls and then you
restart it and THEN the ABS kicks back on it ain't cool!
[/quote]
This shouldn't happen unless you turn your key off then back on
to restart..?
I turn my ABS off on every ride. Driving aggressively off road
with ABS the rear brake does nothing for me but vibrate under my
foot. But with my ABS turned off and my bike stalls on me I can
either dump the clutch or hit the starter button and it fires
right back up with the ABS still locked out. My ABS only turns
back on when I turn the key off and back on.

I don't know about anybody else, but it happened to me and the
ignition remained on. I certainly didn't try to turn the key
off and on while descending the hill. It didn't make me crash,
but it was a little unnerving until I realized what was going
on. That was when I was in Colorado, the the mountains were
huge.
