       2014 690 Front Brakes
       By: bent34 Date: May 13, 2014, 8:50 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Hi all. I decided last week that I absolutely had to own a new
690 and somehow I found one in Dallas that had a deposit but the
guy had to back out. I bought it immediately.
I only have 40 miles on it and almost all was with a passenger
(6yo on the front) cruising around town. I'll hit the Sam
Houston on Saturday for a real break-in, and next week I'm going
to Big Bend for a few days to finish the break-in.
The dozen or so times I intentionally tested the front ABS it
really impressed me, but I don't know enough yet for a real
review. I did four laps on my son's peewee track in the yard and
blew every corner waiting on the rear to lock up, so the ABS
must be turned off for dirt use!
Has anyone pursued or thought about disabling the rear
       completely? I know there's a plugin, but I'm talking about a
brake line that goes from the master cylinder straight to the
caliper like a normal bike, without buying the $100 scam box.
That way the switch on the dash would turn the front wheel ABS
on or off and the rear would never work. I think this would be
ideal. It would involve some creative wiring and coming up with
a way to fool pump as well. None of this is a big deal, just
curious if anyone has messed with it.
Next topic, and much more important. I like my front brake lever
close to the bar. The '14 690 has a dial adjuster, but the
plunger in the lever is glued in place and has a mechanical
safety. I removed the glue and adjusted it where I wanted, then
reinstalled the mechanical safety. My concern is with the front
brake lever pivot bolt. It has a VERY pathetic nut stamped out
of sheet metal! At first I was going to drill a hole through the
bottom and use a cotter pin, but instead I just ran a zip tie
through the middle of the hollow pivot pin/bolt. Based on my
experience mechanically and bike related, I think this is very
important. So important in fact, that I decided to post this
       book of a post.
I'm so stoked to move into the DS world!

       Hey Ty,
Before you risk messing with the physical brakes, I'd consider
popping the three fuses that control the ABS system. I don't
recall the fuse numbers off-hand, but they're listed in the
manual. I discuss this a little bit here:

I haven't bothered doing it yet, since I've been primarily been
riding street of late :(. If you do this, be sure to post up in
the Mods section to share your results.

Bent, talk a little about Sam Houston if you could. I live in
Beaumont so its not that far, I think ? I rode for 40 years at
Boykin Springs and it was the BEST place within 500 miles of
here, they started closing it down little by little, some kind
of dang woodpecker couldn't breed because of the noise, and we
have been looking around ever since. I have heard of the SH
trails but never been there, is it anything like Boykin...Roost

The Sam is fun, or at least I think so. I've been riding there
for 7 years because it is my backyard (40 minute drive). Sand,
roots, and whoops. No elevation. It has plenty to ride and never
see the same trails twice during a two or three day weekend. I
usually put down 50 miles or so each day I go.
I hear lots of negative feedback from people that come to ride,
but they aren't ready for all the sand. It is a lot to handle on
a 690, but I've done it. The 300 is my preferred weapon in the
       woods.
I've never ridden Boykin so I don't know how it compares. I'd be
happy to show you around, just email me and let me know what
size bike you're on so I can choose mine appropriately. A
message board stranger showed me around on my first visit and
I'm eternally grateful. I'm happy to pay that forward.

I've left my abs on when in the dirt and have had no problem,
I've grabbed the them full on in sand without a hitch. I'm sure
I will turn the abs off at some point to goof around for a bit
but really see no reason to turn it off just because people
think one needs to do so when in the dirt. Each to their own
       pleasure though.

I broke my front lever on my 14, and the new one was not glued,
so no worries there. I know what you mean about the stamped
nut, but since it's so large diameter, I don't worry about it.
As far as the ABS goes, light dirt use is fine, but as I found
out a couple of weeks ago, when you get it on a truly big trail
(like the 717 nearby) and your going down a two or three story
hill at a 45 degree angle and the engine stalls and then you
restart it and THEN the ABS kicks back on it ain't cool! I also
got my recall letter today for the rear brake spring that says
(in big bold letters) It is mandatory that you discontinue
       riding your motorcycle until the defect has been repaired.  eh;
it's worked just fine for 1,700 miles, but I suppose I'll take
       it in.

Press and hold the Mode button on the dash until ABS light
flashes...... now go ride in the dirt with ABS off. Cycles
back on if you turn the key off (but NOT when you hit the switch
       on the right handlebar.
I like ABS on the road (A LOT!) but almost crashed a few times
off road since it didn't slow me down going hot into a turn on
the dirt! Can't lock up the rear or anything to slide it around
       etc.
$100 for the 'thingy' from KTM.... ugh.

Hmm, I wonder how many really know how anti lock brakes work?
Why would they cause you to not stop fast enough?

       Dane,
The rear on my 690 pulses so much, you may as well not even be
pushing on the pedal in dirt. Forgot to turn mine off on one of
my first dirt only rides, and nearly ramped a berm into the
woods, lol. Once you get going really fast offroad, you really
need to be able to have full control of your wheel speed to set
       up for corners.
However, for me, I'll take abs on pavement every chance I can
get. I love that our 690's have the option and that it's easy
       enough to disable.
