Recalibrating the Speedo for 17" Wheels
By: Rusty Shovel Date: December 22, 2013, 6:45 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hey all,
Considering an SM conversion. I located this info on
       recalibrating the speedo.  I love that KTM makes this so easy;
my WRR required a separate component to adjust the speedo.
Follow the pink wire from the speedometer under the headlight
       mask to the connector.
       Disconnect connector.
Turn bike on and cycle to where the dash is displaying Mode 1.
Hold both buttons down for about 10 seconds.
The wheel size should now be flashing.
Change the wheel size to 1870 for the 17" wheels.
Press both buttons at the same time again.
       Turn bike off.
Turn bike back on to verify that wheel size has been changed (so
you don't have to undo the headlight mask and fiddle with the
       plug again)
       Connect plug under headlight mask.
       Go for a ride!
The process becomes very easy once you do it the first time.
There is plenty of room under the headlight mask to undo the
plug. I did not cut any wires and will not. It's just too easy
to unplug it and plug it back it in.
Thanks to Buddoggin at Thumpertalk for this concise tutorial.
If anyone does this, I'd love to see some photos of the surgery.
Specifically, I'd like some photo's of this wire that needs
       unplugging.
**See below: another source claims it's better to simply cut the
wire at pin 18, and never have to unplug anything to change
       between wheel sets.

Hey!!! That's me!!! lol. I did share that on Thumpertalk but I
didn't write it. I think I found it on SMJ.

So im trying to recalibrate my 08E speedo and im having a bit of
trouble. There's no pink wire, so I consulted the manual. It
says to unplug the main harness the joins up to the computer and
the pull pin 18A. Mmmmk, so there's a pic too, but its fairly
dark and unreliable. So I then flip back to the wiring harness
diagram, to try and locate that exact wire. I can find a bunch
of different things that plug into that harness, but not the
speedo sensor. Anyone know which color wire to unplug so I can
reset this damn computer finally? >:(

I wonder why the speedo requires ANY wire to be manually
plugged/unplugged. You'd think this would be a completely
electronic issue. Anyone try doing this without unplugging the
       wire?

So I did the unplug/reset operation my manual described. Yikes,
those little wires are delicate as hell. Almost destroyed it
trying to put it back in. Yep, the computer cooperated once u
unplug that lone wire. Wierd, why wouldn't they just have it as
a regular option in the computer? KTM frustrates me sometimes.
       :-\

That would be a great product idea! I imagine that a quick
disconnect would not be very hard to manufacture. You listening
Tumbleweed? You could call it the Chameleon!

       [size=14pt][size=10pt]Might not be KTM's fault, I wouldn't be
surprised if a user tamper proof speedo/odo is a requirement for
federal approval here in the US.

I just read the following from the BlakeBlog
       (
  HTML http://sobiloff.typepad.com/blakeblog/ktm-690-enduro-faq.html)
Adjusting the Odometer for Different Front Wheel Circumferences
Remove old Odometer and the connector.
Cut the wire for pin 18 (should be Brown/Grey for 690E) on the
       connector.
       Install Odometer
Turn key to "on" and with the meter set to "Trip 1", press and
       hold "Mode" for 10 sec.
Length xxxx (the 17" circumference) will show up (flashing),
press "mode" to increase and "set" to decrease the
       circumference.
The correct setting for 21" should be 2205.
Press "mode" and "set" simultaneously to set it.
The only thing that the "pin 18" does is lock the Odo from
       adjusting wheelsize.
***The upshot is: Once the wire is removed, there is no need to
       re-install it!!***

I need to figure out a way to take that pin in and out without
messing up the connection port. I plan on switching out my 17s
for my enduro setup quite frequently... so, WTF. I know you can
take those fragile pins out only a few times before it's game
       over. Any ideas? ???
