       Lids
By: Colorado Rider Date: April 1, 2014, 7:40 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I have a full dirt helmet with the goggles and such, but it's
not the best for street riding and (as I found out), it can
about rip your neck off if you turn your head to look at
something at speed. Also when riding when it is cold (it was 25
on my commute this morning), no way would I want a dirt helmet -
my neck hurt just from the air that was getting in on my street
       helmet!
My street bike helmet is okay, but I wanted something a little
nicer and more versatile that I could use everyday. I didn't
really want to spend a fortune (i.e. $600+), but I wanted some
       nice features.
The one thing that's been a pain on my street helmet is the
visor; I've got one clear and one dark mirror. I often leave
when it is still dark out, and then it gets really bright later
in the high-altitude of Colorado, so I wanted a helmet with an
       internal sun vision.
       I am also a stickler for a full-face for full protection; here's
       what I cam up with:
Nolan - neat, but not sure about the strength of the mouth
protection; did not look that substantial to me.

       Shoei GT-Air
Looked nice and well made. Fit really tight on me and kind of
       expensive at about $500

I did like the Shark Vision-R BeCool a lot, it was my runner-up
       - Shark also makes the Bluetooth set-up to fit this helmet

       This is what I did get - I like the features and the way it fit;
also the price at $229. Looks sharp too.
       Scorpion ECO-500 Heritage
  HTML http://images1.revzilla.com/product_images/0065/6853/scorpion_exo500_heritage_helmet_detail.jpg
I also got the extra smoke external visor and dark smoke
       internal visior.
       Honorable mentions:
If you wear these, you are just plain cool!

One more interesting helmet is the Suomy MX tourer. It is a
dirt bike helmet with a internal sun visor. I like it, but just
wasn't sold on the visor, it just appeared to be more for looks.
Also at $400, it was twice the cost of the Scorpion. However,
I would say that it is worth checking out. The only place that
seems to have it is Helmet City.

I've had the HJC SyMax III in flat black for three years now.
I'd buy it again if it were stolen. I actually returned a Shoei
Neotec helmet in favor of the HJC. The HJC helmet fit my head
better. I like that I can flip up the chin bar while fueling or
talking. I also like how easy it is to remove the visor for
cleaning/replacement. There are many color choice options for
replacement visors. I just purchased an amber lens with a clear
       Pinlock insert.
       One gripe: removing the internal sun visor is a one shot deal;
the clip holding it in always breaks when removed. Since I've
only removed the internal visor to replace it, this was a minor
       annoyance.

Helmets are like sunglasses, you gotta try em on to see how
       they'll work for you.

Helmet selection depends a lot on 1. How much riding do you in a
day. 2. Where you live...... So let's talk about 1. Usually the
more expensive the helmet is the lighter it will be, so riding a
short distance around town a heavier helmet might work for you,
on the other hand if you are riding all day 500 plus miles a
helmet the weighs less will not fatigue you as much......okay
now let's take about 2., so how does where you live make a
difference...well here in Southeast Texas the summer days can
reach near 100 degrees and if we go a little bit west days can
be over a 100 degree. What does that mean for helmet selection
plain and simple you need a lot of air flow through the helmet
       to keep cooler.
Here's an example: I bought a Shoei Quest helmet because the
reviews said it was really quiet (I still have it) to be super
quiet means it has less airflow...so it's crazy HOT in the
summer. if you live farther North it might work for you. Less
air flow also means a more fogging shield. It's a very nice
helmet but it's hot in the summer. I also have a couple of Shoei
RF1100's the 1100 flows tons of air you quickly notice a
difference from the Quest, a much, much cooler helmet to wear in
Texas Summers. I think it also flows through the air a bit
better than the quest which translates to less neck fatigue.
So think about how you ride and where you live... and then
helmet fit.....read the reviews on air flow for the helmet you
       want to purchase.

I got a shoei hornet ds. Cost me $550 and I faceplanted on a
fireroad 2 minths later. Saved my faced from getting thrashed
but now its all scratched up. Looks ain't everything so I still
rock it as my mainstay. When I do the sumo thing around town I
rock the HJC dirtbike helmet w/ goggles. Its heavier with less
airflow so I might try a Soumoy helmet next. A buddy just bought
one and said its got mad airflow. That's what I'm gonna need
when it starts getting real hot and humid here in the summer.

considerably less head cavitation than my shoei rf1100 street
helmet (I'm not kidding) BEST HELMET I HAVE OWNED. ;D

If yr basing yr choice on protection (and we should, but let's
face it, we do buy with our eyes), check out the Kali helmets.
They have a new style of inner protection which is supposed to
work far better than standard stuff.
       They are not expensive either.

Not exactly the most subtle. I should wear this to work!

Unfortunately it's $780. So it's waaay to much moola just to
get a rise out of my boss. Dang.
For those of you with more scratch, or who are simply a bigger
fan of Predator than I am:

Now that Predator helmet is the best one made. This will
probably be my from-me to-me christmas present this year. No
lasers, jes leds. I'll post my collection of authentic german,
supreme soviet, and whatever helmets later on.
