       Adventure Spec Side Case Covers
By: Rusty Shovel Date: March 20, 2014, 6:58 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hey all,
After a pretty unspectacular flop, I learned that the magnesium
clutch cover is fragile. This knowledge cost me $350 in a new
clutch cover, oil, and filters. Hopefully I didn't damage my
clutch itself (it looks okay, but I won't know till my new
clutch cover comes in and I get it all together.
       Don't be me!
I just ordered these from Adventure Spec:

They are made of aluminum and, paired with my Flatlands Racing
Skid Plate, will hopefully prevent this happening again.
I'll post again when they arrive.

Adventure Spec Side Case Covers -- Installation
By: Rusty Shovel Date: March 24, 2014, 7:44 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I got the natural anodized aluminum because I didn't want it to
scratch up. Plus, it'll match my Flatlands Skidplate.
Here they are with all attendant tools. The covers DON'T come
with the high temperature silicone needed to affix the plates.
Instructions on the Adventure Spec website say to go to "any
hardware store" to obtain the silicone. Home Depot didn't have
any. Advance Auto Part had some, but it was bright red (more on
       that later).

Installation is pretty straightforward; squirt goo and affix.

Notice the tape. It takes 24 hours for the silicone to "cure."
In the mean time, the cover will slowly creep with gravity
       unless it's supported.
Now the clutch side. Notice how nice and new it is--because I
cracked my old one (I hadn't even made a payment on the bike
       yet).

Some of the silicone slipped out the sides. It wipes up pretty
       easily.
  HTML https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-rFTLbfWPtRw/UzDMZH35rUI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/GSP8VpMMib0/w647-h863-no/DSCN5602.jpg
It didn't seem like I had enough silicone on the other side, so
I popped it off and added more.

This ended a bit messily, and I spent the next 10 minutes
cleaning silicone off the case. If you can find black or clear
       hi-temp silicone, I'd recommend it.
We'll see how well it manages to stay on. I'm gonna be ****ed
if I lose one commuting on the freeway. I'm a little
disappointed with the coverage on the left side.
  HTML https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NqYnVAfqmDo/UzDMS-UB05I/AAAAAAAAA8I/uiThVFA0pEU/w647-h863-no/DSCN5605.jpg
See where my shifter has already gouged into the case? I don't
think this will help in that regard. I seems like the cover is
too skimpy on the left side.
I'll update my impressions as I use them.

I was hoping to get the black anodized version but they are not
going to be back in stock until 08/05/2014. That either May or
       August I have no idea.
I adhered a similar armor on my DRZ cases. The parts came from
Thumper Talk. I haven't looked to see if ones are available for
the 690. However when I did the DRZ I didn't use high temp
silicone and they stuck for 14,000 miles then I sold the bike.
I also used a liberal application of the RTV because, IMHO, the
RTV acts like a cushion to absorb energy from the bashing.

Coursegold if your looking for black try these www.carbonadi.com
I've got some coming should be in this week!
I'll show pix when I get them seems to have more coverage, plus
has a Kevlar layer under the carbon fiber. Kind of pricey but
still less than that clutch cover.

       Look good.... but have questions...
How thick are they? In other words, do the levers make contact
       with normal use?
Looks like it is clear coated - do you think it might be easily
       cracked? (exposing carbon fibres)

They are about 1/16" thick, no don't hit pedals at all, stuck a
paint stirrer between gear shift and cover till it dries.
I hope I put plenty of silicone in between to absorb any shock,
and they do have a Kevlar layer for strength. Time will tell how
they hold up. I don't care how shabby they get, long as the
magnesium covers don't fracture. Sure look sweet right now :D

Went with AS. Pulled a dumbass and broke the tab off prior to
install. Oh well. Still more protection than I had before. :P
