       First Service Cost

       Hey all,
Anyone gotten their first break-in service done? I was
wondering how much this cost at your dealer? A 690 Duke owner
from the UK claimed he was charged 200 pounds (I can't be
bothered to look up the pounds symbol). That's about $350! For
       an oil change?
I'll check with my dealer and find his rate and post it here.
I'm curious if there's a set dealer price.

Just do it yourself. It really is quite easy to change the oil
       yourself. :)
Unless I have a major issue where the bike needs to be dug into
       I always try to DYI.

For the first service I may bite the bullet and have the service
department do it. It depends on the cost, of course, but I like
to have all the little items inspected to ensure against larger
problems down the road. I also will have the service department
look at it every 6000 miles, as the manual dictates. I like to
change my own oil every 1-2k miles.

I understand, Endo, but like Rusty I prefer to have the dealer
check out my bike after initial break-in. They see these bikes
everyday so detect the little things I would never notice. The
shop rates gets me crazy ($90/hour in AZ) & I like to do my dirt
bike maintenance myself. But, on a bike like this that I travel
70mph+ on, I want a pro to take a look at once in awhile.
So, interim oil changes & frequent inspections we can do
ourselves but off to the dealer for 600 mile check & major
       intervals from there on.
Btw, got my new bike Friday but only have 2 miles before my
garage door broke & couldn't budge it until the repair guy came
yesterday. So, car & new bike stuck inside the freaking house!
My riding buddies came for a short dash & put 20+ miles on while
I have 2 miles. Go figure!
Amazing bike & my riding mates are envious!.....

Just stopped by the dealer...$170 for the first service. Kinda
insane. The dealer said they go through the bike to make sure
it's all in spec and wearing properly. Said it takes 2 hrs of
       labor.
***Modified 2/27: The quoted service price did NOT include
parts! They charged me $250 for the service! That went from
"kinda insane" to "bat-shit crazy!" I do NOT recommend the
       first service. Do it yourself.
BTW, I asked what justified charging $200 for an hour of labor?
They said they tightened the bolts (!), adjusted the chain,
lubed the chain, and plugged it into their computer to search
for fault codes. I couldn't check those other things, but I can
tell if a chain's been lubed...and guess what? Bone dry.
I asked if the chain had been lubed, the service manager said
yes. I said, "what did you lube it with, dust?" He didn't talk
much after that. I took it to the general manager. "If they
said they lubed the chain then didn't," I asked, "how do I know
they did anything else they said they did?"
The manager was totally cool. He apologized, said he'd ensure
that all points in the inspection would be itemized in the
future, and gave me a credit of $80 to offset the additional
expense that was not disclosed when I made the appointment. In
short, he bent over backward to make things better. Still, I'm
hesitant to take my bike in for service in the future.

Rusty, I know this is apples & oranges, but to make us both feel
better re: the 690, my 2011 F800GS was just in the shop for the
first time in 3 years after the initial 600 mile service for an
"Annual Service" visit & it was $380. That was WITHOUT full
synthetic oil; it would have been more if BMW didn't now
recommend semi-synthetic in that bike instead. Again, I look at
it like we're paying a trained eye. I know other have great
confidence in their maintenance abilities but I go back to our
       earlier discussion.
I also know if I posted this, say, at the ADVRider forum, I'd
have guys jumping all over me calling me a pussy not doing
absolutely 100% of my own maintenance, etc, etc. ::) So, to
       each his own.
       I know I'm repeating, but on my Ducati's years ago, I didn't
want to be going 100mph with ME doing the maintenance; I know my
limitations so have to/willing to pay. For me, it's part of the
price of admission to play the game. And, at age 60, I'd rather
be out riding. I spend my shop time on my beloved 1960's
       Hodakas!

Eh, to each his own. All I know is my "dealer ship experts"
experience in years past have left me unimpressed. They are
about making money & usually charge up the @#% for basic stuff.
Oil changes are easy, & in the first service what has had time
to wear or fall apart? If your bike has issues at this point you
got a bike built on Friday or a lemon. IMHO you should check for
bolts that may be a little loose periodically, worn sprockets or
chain, & tire pressure on your own any way. I also have only
seen about ONE mechanic worth a crap and who takes the utmost
pride in his work & is more anal about perfection than I am.
Hopefully this is the guy that works on your bike & not the
other lackeys looking to do as many jobs/tickets in a day so
they can pad their wallet. And Rusty are you sure you want the
place you bought your bike from to look it over? Aren't they the
same ones who set up the steering stops to orbit the moon?
Surely they check these bikes out before selling them? & how
many 690's have most dealerships dealt with? It's not like
they're on every street corner. By all means do what makes you
comfortable, but I would be more apprehensive when it comes to
giving the dealership more of my hard earned money especially
       over the basics.

Endo, I hear ya & don't disagree at all. To belabor this a bit
further, my Yamaha WR250F & KTM 200XC-W have NEVER been back to
the dealership since purchase day. For my part, I'm fortunate
that the dealership 1 mile from my house is owned by the owner
of godaddy.com (rich guy!) & he's apparently made it a point to
staff his dealership with the best Technicians our area has to
offer. Even the place I bought my 690 from (35 miles away)
complimented the KTM Technician by my house as the very best
       anywhere.
To support your suggestion, there's no better way to get to know
your bike & how it works than to work on it yourself. I
remember the nervous first time I took a steering head & swing
arm apart to re-grease. All time well spent & a great learning
experience. I'm still looking forward to doing lots of work on
       my 690.
Now...electronics is another thing altogether.... ;D

LOL, couldn't agree more Bob ;D and that go's double on the
electronics! That stuff gets me so twisted up the inner cave man
rears his head (rocks & other objects start flying & sticks
start whacking anything in arms length)

So a buddy of mine got me into dirtbikes. This dude is a do it
urself kinda guy. Learned alot from him. Upgraded tobthe 690 as
we parted ways. Had some trouble with my EFI when I was down in
socal, took it to the shop as a last resort. Even though I do
believe he did his best, wasn't worth the $$$. Bust yer
knuckles, read those forums and make it happen. I now live in an
area with no "orange level" dealer anywhere nearby. Guess what.
I don't give a damn. U can learn as much on the Internet as
those guys in the shop know. We got the resources. Its all about
will power and elbow grease. Get some. :P
