Old school memories :)

I have told you about going to St Monica's Convent boarding
school from 11 to 15 years old and we have a FB page too but it
has been quiet for ages. The other day I see one of the girls a
year below me ... (Her husband is now a Mayor of ... cannot
remember in Durham ? ) said she had heard of two of the nuns in
a rest home in Ireland and she wrote to them...
" I was thrilled to finally get a communication from Sr Mgt Mary
Costello today (Murdy). She is in the retirement home and Sr.
Margaret Quirke (Aggie) is there too. Sr Mary tells me Sr
Margaret has good and bad days with her memory coming and going.
She was 91 this month. Sr Mary will be 93 in February. She is
well and wrote on behalf of them both. Strange to think they
were only just or not quite 30 when I went to Skipton. Sad :( "
Sister Margaret Mary .... Murdy AKA Murderous Mag ... yes a nun
but she was so bossy and not a fav. of mine and always watching
and telling us off for any wee mistake .. and also Sister Mary
Agnes AKA Aggie who was my favourite nun ... both were young
back in those days too ) Great memories :)

It's nice to have memories like that to look back on. I remember
when we moved up here I ran into a nun, Sister Eileen, who was
the principal of St Felix Bankstown when my girls went there.
She had been moved up here to be principal of the catholic
school in Toukley. Sadly she had cancer and had to retire and I
guess she has since passed. I always liked her, she was such a
down to earth person and smoked on occasions, drank too and
flirted with all the dads [emoji23]

OH WOW so Sister Eileen smoked and drank ....????? None of the
nuns that I knew ... back in the olden days were even allowed to
do that :)))))))))
MY brain is now thinking and I believe you have told us about
this nun and her smoking and drinking before !!!!! As for
flirting with the Dads ???????
I have no idea what nuns are allowed to do nowadays but I See
they can wear normal clothes unless they belong to a " Special
Religious Group " :)
Loads of old St Monica's girls have been on the FB group these
last couple of days and it is nice catching up with some of them
:)

Sr Eileen was the only nun I ever knew who smoked, drank and
flirted, not that she did those things very often and only with
some of us mums so we would keep her secrets [emoji6]
Nuns these days don't wear full habits like they used to, unless
they are the segregated type and steeped in their old culture.
Most wear a very light habit and you wouldn't know they were
nuns until you see the cross around their neck and the rosary
beads hanging from their waists. I rarely see any these days
anyway.
It's nice to be in contact with old mates and relive some
memories of our younger days [emoji4]

Yes I do understand that most nuns nowadays do wear normal
clothes PLUS their Holy things NOT That I have seen any nuns for
years actualleh I would not recognise one anyway ! ...... It is
the really religious ones that still wear the habits .. there is
a name for them ...... Cannot remember !!!
It was great catching up and reading the St Monica's stories :)
Got a few more on tonight :)

There used to be a convent/school in Llandudno that the nuns
ran, they were scary and I’m glad I never went there, I did
nurse one of the old nuns in the hospice when I worked there,
the convent has closed down now, it was a beautiful building,
it’s actually still there but I think it’s been bought by a
developer who will no doubt knock it down and build expensive
houses there as it’s right by the shore.

Hello Chris [emoji4]
There aren't many convents around anymore here either as there
aren't many nuns to fill them like they used to. Same as
Catholic priests, I don't believe there are many of them
either!!!!!

Same with St Monica's Convent now an old folks home ... !! NO
priests here either except one local who comes to Waverley or
Patea on different Sundays ! Once upon a time it was Mass every
Sunday but now often no priest available so some of the locals
say a few prayers in church on Sunday ! Lots of people do still
go every Sunday !

My neighbours are devout catholics and go to mass each week,
Shannon went a few times a week when she was alive.
