My old mate Maureen
By: Moira Date: August 30, 2025, 5:49 am

Had an email from her saying she was in a local Hospice ( in
Perth Aus ) as she had trouble breathing and swallowing.
" These people are wonderful and can’t do enough to help. So
glad. I’m here it’s really struggling but I think I will go home
. I lost a stone in weight swallowing difficulty and exhausted.
Had a good nights sleep last night. The food is good. May chain
myself to the bed if I have to leave " !
I just cannot help saying that this is familiar to me ! So I am
putting it in writing !

Usually one doesn't go home from a hospice!! Why does she think
she will be sent home? Does she say what is causing her
breathing and swallowing difficulties?

I got this in an email 26th July 2025 From Maureen ......
I am the usually very tired self. Diagnosed stage 3 lung cancer
metastasis in the lymph nodes. Complicated by enlarged heart
osteoporosis/ arthritis COPD issues eating due to hernia. I have
lost 6 pounds in weight this week.
So Maureen is not so well but she does not come on FB or do
private emails and chat any more like she used to do but she was
still managing living alone at home with her doggie pal ! Thats
all I know lately but I AM sure she has been in the Hospice once
before ...... or maybe it was her next door neighbour who was
not well at one time ! Pass... no more news today and she has
not answered my email :(
I think it all went downhill when Alan left and her son Daniel
started getting into trouble in various ways and now I believe
Daniel works in the mines ..... don't quote me on that ! :(

I didn't realise she had lung cancer and if it has metastasised
to her lymph nodes back in July, I don't like her chances of
being released from the hospice. I am so sorry to hear this

Got this email today..............Still here very tired pain in
legs had morphine jab which worked a treat.
Issues with Dan he doesn’t know I am in the hospice xxxx
I have replied but she has not replied or answered any of my
questions.... asking if she has help if she goes home and so on
.... So I am none the wiser really. I know she has had to stop
smoking a while ago because of lung problems and breathing
difficulties :(
I have been looking back on my emails and Maureen was fine last
December .... 2024 or she was not moaning to me and fine up till
May this year ... then she seemed to have some health bad
problems according to her few emails. :(
I don't like thinking about it all :((((((((((((((((

It seems to have come on quickly then, which means it wasn't
detected until it was too late, or she just didn't want to tell
you.
I went to Shannon's funeral yesterday and the church was
packed, she was loved by all as she was such a beautiful person.
It was so sad and her children and grandchildren were shattered
by it all [emoji22]

That is exactly what I thought too... Maureen did not want to
tell me as I am so far away and there IS nothing I can do .. and
thinking back.... I never knew anything major was wrong until
the fact she needed Joseph to come pick up Madeleine's painting
:( That got me thinking !
I have no idea yet what she is doing with her house as I am sure
she paid all the mortgage off all after her Mum died in UK a
couple of years ago :(
IF I had a phone that worked .... I Might ring her BUT I tried
with John's phone and NO answer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Twice !!! :(

I didn't know Joseph picked up a painting, when was this? The
last you mentioned, Maureen didn't know where Joseph was?

You can go home from a hospice, people sometimes come in for
pain/symptom control or for respite just to give care givers at
home a break, it all depends on the bed situation, I loved
working in the hospice and we very often had patients come in
several times before they died
