A riddle for you all

A couple of years ago I was researching the Children's crusades
of 1212 so I could write a book about it. As I was studying the
historical accounts I discovered a truth that is kind of a
riddle and I wanted to see how many of you can figure it out.
So the riddle...when is being a slave a greater blessing than
being a free "man"?

Romans 6:15-23 New International Version (NIV)
Slaves to Righteousness
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but
under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer
yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the
one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to
death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But
thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you
have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that
has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from
sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
King James
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but
under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to
obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto
death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye
have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was
delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of
righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of
your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to
uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield
your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from
righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now
ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become
servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end
everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal
life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

One of the reasons that the children went on the crusade was
because of the poverty and famine they were living in. What
they found is that some who survived and were sold into slavery
were no longer having to concern themselves with what to eat or
where to sleep, etc. for their masters provided what they
needed.
You know, much like God provides us with food if we trust Him

I was thinking about the story of Joseph and how his brothers
sold him and he was taken into slavery in Egypt. Joseph was
about 17 then I believe. I think about the things that happened
to Joseph being sold into slavery, being wrongly accused by
Potiphar's wife and being in prison; Then I think about this
bible verse:
Rom. 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose.
The good that came from what happened to Joseph.
Gen. 45:4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come closer
to me.” And they came closer. And he said, “I am your brother
Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5“And now do not be grieved or
angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me
before you to preserve life. 6“For the famine has been in the
land these two years, and there are still five years in which
there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. 7“And God sent me
before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to
keep you alive by a great deliverance. 8 “Now, therefore, it was
not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father
to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the
land of Egypt.
God meant it for good; all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.
Gen. 50:20 But as for you, you thought evil against me; but God
meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save
many people alive.
I can see how this was a blessing for Joseph; how being a slave
was a greater blessing than being a free man and not only a
greater blessing for Joseph but also for many people to help
preserve them alive through the famine.
