The Protoevangelium of James (Apocalypse Yakob)
By: patrick jane Date: November 13, 2019, 12:00 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
By dakk:
Hello and greetings everyone. First off I would like to thank
@Joe for adding this new subforum title of Apocrypha, (which was
merely a suggestion in the thread asking for such suggestions
and recommendations here, Suggestions for Subforums?).
I would like this thread to concentrate on Apocalypse Yakob,
([A] Revelation of Yakob), aka, "Protoevangelium Jacobi",
"Proto-Gospel of James", or "Protoevangelium of James". Of
course any and all are welcome to participate, discuss, and-or
debate, however one may feel led to engage in the discussion,
(as long as it is within the guidelines of the overall
forum-wide rules).
There are many texts, manuscripts, and fragments for the
"Infancy Narrative of James" or Infancy Gospel of James, as it
has also come to be known, (among the group of so-called infancy
narratives or infancy gospels), so many so that some have come
up with certain compilation texts that are more like modern
Biblical texts, (compilation texts made from multiple sources).
One of these compilation texts for the Protoevangelium of James
may be found in a book by Bart Ehrman and Zlatko Plese,
"Apocryphal Gospels: Texts and Translations", and the basis for
this text the authors explain was compiled, (previous to their
own efforts), by E. de Strycker and includes the more recently
discovered and earliest full manuscript now known as, (papyrus),
Bodmer V.
There is a good introduction to the history of the text, from
the same book, which may be found online in a Google Books
preview here, while the introduction to the Proto-Gospel of
James may be found on Page 31. The Greek text used in the
translation is also in the book preview together with an English
translation of the text submitted by the authors, which begins
on Page 40 of the same preview.
There are also other English and Greek versions of the text
available online in html web page format as opposed to PDF.
This appears to be the E. de Strycker text someone posted
online:

The most important passage in all of the nativity accounts, imo,
including Matthew and Luke, may be found in the following
section of the Proto-Gospel of Yakob: for without the following
explanation not only does the entire infancy narrative remain a
mystery to most but even many of the parables, allegories,
sayings, and teachings of the Master during his earthly ministry
cannot truly be understood.
According to the Parable of the Sower, the Seed is the
Logos-Word, and herein we see that Maryah retains seed or
"captures", (which is generally rendered as to conceive but
literally means to capture seed or retain seed, whether literal
or figurative). And what does she retain or capture seed from?
She retains seed, (conceives), from the Logos-Word of YHWH
Elohim the Living: and this allegory is how the holy one is
formed within her, (as Paul similarly says that the holy one is
formed within us, Gal 4:19).

[A] Revelation of Yakob (Birth of Maryah) 11:1-3
[01a] And she took the pitcher and went forth to draw water, and
behold, a voice, saying to her, "Greetings, you who are favored,
the Master is with you! Blessed are you among women!"
[01b] And Maryah looked roundabout to the right and to the left,

entered into her house and set down the pitcher, taking up the
royal purple, and sat upon her throne, and drew out the royal

[02a] And behold, an angel of YHWH stood before her, saying,
"Fear not, Maryah, for you have found favor before the Master of
All: you shall capture-conceive [retain seed] from His
logos-word."
[02b] But having heard this Maryah disputed within herself,
saying, "Shall I conceive from of [the Word of] YHWH Elohim the
Living? and bring forth as every woman brings forth?"
[03a] And the angel of YHWH said, "Not that way, Maryah, for the
power of Elohim shall overshadow you, [cast a shade upon you]
and therefore the holy one being generated from you shall be
called [a] Son of the Highest: and you shall call his name
Ι̅H, for he shall deliver his people from their sins."
[03b] And Maryah said, "Behold, the female-servant of YHWH is
before Him: be it unto me according to your rhema-word."

So you believe in a literal physical virgin birth but call the
Protoevangelium of James a myth? Sorry but that is just too
hypocritical for me to even take you seriously. The reality is
that you must reject the Protoevangelium because, as shown in
the one passage I quoted above, it refutes your carnal
understanding of a literal physical virgin birth, which is
preposterous, and because of such carnal minded beliefs in what
Paul calls Jewish fables, old wives tales, and mythos, the name
of Elohim is blasphemed among the gentiles.
These things are indeed mythos and yet they are true, but only
in the allegorical typological sense as teaching tools for babes
in Messiah: to take them literally is egregious error on your
own part even if you do have the majority of mainstream
Christianity on your side. I also have no doubt that your other
post, which I did not respond to, is likely written by an author
or authors who do much the same as you, if not worse, (by
outright rejecting the virgin birth accounts, if it so be).

No, Mary did not go and live in the temple as a toddler.
Good luck spiritualing the text into anything you want it to
say.

The Gospel Luke supports what I say:
Luke 2:36
36 And there was one Hannah, a prophetess, a daughter of
Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, having
lived with a husband seven years from her virginity:
That is Hannah the mother of Maryah. Poor spiritually deficient
you if you do not understand or know how and why this is true.
And moreover, yes, tribe of Asher, (lol), and a prophetess, a
daughter of (the school of) Phanuel, just as the passage says.
Poor, poor, spiritually deficient you, if you do not understand
or know how and why these things are true.

That document is a myth, an obvious work of fantasy.[/quote]
By freelight:
A good number of scholars dont even believe Abraham or Moses
were real people, but mythological characters created by scribes
of the religious cults or traditions concerned. A good deal of
'inspired writings' may also contain allegory, myth and fiction.
There are likely a good number of apocryphal works that are just
as valid or inspired as what the church-state or church councils
later decided were to be 'canonized' as they began to 'organize'
and 'instutitionalize' a 'religion' about Jesus, and even what
was 'canonized' could contain a good number of fictional
narratives, mythology, tradition, allegory and other figurative
embellishments.
As a student of religious studies or mythology in general then,
its better to look at the whole forest and not just a few trees
in the total context of a given religious cult or tradition, so
that one begins to see that alot of what is passed off today as
your typical pop-theology or memed 'Christainity' is just what
tradition and church councils have 'pre-figured' and
'con-figured' it to be, then slapping a label of 'orthodoxy' on
it, assuming thats 'true', when all things ought be thorougly
researched and questioned.
Not even Paul mind you mentioned anything about a virgin birth
(VB), so that could be a 'myth' as well, later pasted into Matt.
and Luke, since Mark knows nothing of a VB, - it is also quite
apparent anyways that a VB is 'figurative' language at best, and
what matters at the end of the day according to the best
mystics, Paul included...is to let your heart be the cradle of
the Christ, to let God's logos-word be FORMED in you,....its all
about the kingdom of God within your own consciousness, the
divine seed planted into the soil of heart and soul, and this is
all that really matters in your relationship to 'God', since
Spirit looks at the heart, and into the deep things of the soul,
it is there he searches the inward parts to see if truth,
integrity, love, faith and justice abides.
Remember the pure in heart see God', there is no intellectual
formula or even a creedal decree of belief that ushers a soul
into God's presences or makes him meet for heaven, but the inner
condition, disposition and recepitivity of the spirit to the
Infinite Spirit that alone avails.
Furthermore, the kingdom of heaven Jesus preached is
'apocryhpal' in nature anyways,...it is the hidden treasure in a
field, the pearl of great price that is a spiritual kingdom, a
realm of divine consciousness, an awareness of the absolute,
eternal, infinite and ultimate Reality, which is the
omnipresence of Spirit NOW, pervading all space and time. This
kingdom can be enjoyed here, now, because it is the sole
absolute reality, and must be if you accept the omnipresence of
God.
Therefore the whole collection of judeo-xian writings can be
used in its content and context to paint the best collage or
tapestry of what the 'Christ-cult' is all about, and what
religious value or meaning such a 'theology' can impart to man,
which like any other religious tradition will be subjective and
relative to its own catalog of terms.

Thanks for posting Freelight: and the comments I have quoted
from you match up with what Paul teaches, and what the Master
teaches in his parables, proverbs, allegories, idioms, and
sayings, and the section I already quoted from the
Protoevangelium teaches the same about the Seed of the Word and
how it is formed within us, and thus, it also does indeed
harmonize with both the Matthew and Luke infancy accounts if one
digs deep enough into the actual language in Matthew and Luke.
Matthew and Luke do not teach what is presented in most all
English translations of those passages because they are merely
rendered according to the natural mind of the natural man and
distributed, (sold for profit), to the masses of natural minded
people who imagine themselves to be "saved" because they believe
what their "church" has taught them to believe according to the
natural minded way of the natural minded men who rule the
"church".
Paul likewise gives stern warnings about "old wives tales" and
"Jewish fables" and that is precisely what the virgin birth
consists of: but that is not to say that the mythos is wrong or
irrelevant, no, quite the opposite: milk for the babes, and
absolutely necessary so as to understand how the Son of Elohim,
(the Word), is formed within us. The problem is when people
begin to believe such things are natural and physical "miracles"
and then go on to force others to believe in the same carnal way
or they cannot be "saved" according to the dogma. Paul is
adamantly against such beliefs and practices and he says so in
no uncertain terms, calling the infancy narratives "mythos",
which is precisely what they are, but at the same time they are
absolutely necessary, again, so as to understand how the Seed of
the Word is planted in the soil of the heart, (Parable of the
Sower), and how the Son of Elohim, the Word, is formed within
the heart and mind of the disciple.

.
You will not find the word for "matrix",
(μητρα), anywhere in the infancy
narratives, except for Luke 2:23, and the reason we find it
therein alone is because it is quoting from the Torah from a
section which includes animals. Everywhere else in the infancy
narratives we find "en gastri", (εν
γαστρι, in the belly), or
"koilia", (κοιλια, the cavity,
primarily the chest cavity wherein is the heart). The reason
this is true is because the Seed of the Word is consumed, (into
the belly in figurative language), and moreover, consumed with
the eyes and ears but not with the mouth, and therefore the Seed
of the Word enters not into the literal physical matrix of a
woman but into the koilia and the heart of anyone who consumes
the Seed of the Word.
Moreover it is surely not that they were stupid or ignorant
about such things and used the wrong wording: no, they knew
exactly what they were writing and saying, but the carnal minded
translators appear to have no clue what they are saying. Paul
uses μητρα for "the deadness of Sarah's
(literal physical) womb" in Romans 4:19, and thus they knew
precisely what they were saying, (moreover, as already stated,
Luke also uses μητρα in Luke 2:23 where
the Torah passage including animals is quoted).
There is no doubt that the authors of the texts knew what they
meant and what they wrote and yet what they wrote is never
actually rendered into any English translation of those passages
from Matthew and Luke. When you show this to someone all they
can do is call you names, such as Gnostic, heretic, scripture
perverter, and so on and so on, all the while ignoring the plain
cold hard facts straight from the texts.
Show me anywhere from the supposed "received canon" where it
speaks of being with child, pregnant, or speaks of the womb, and
I will show you where it says no such thing but rather speaks in
terms of the gaster-belly and-or the koilia-cavity. And yet
women do not retain SEED in the belly or the heart when it comes
to natural procreation. One would therefore be forced to admit
that the authors of the infancy narratives were outright
ignorant for never using the actual word for the matrix in their
respective infancy narratives, (if indeed one would believe what
the translations say over what the actual Greek texts have
written in them). No, they were not ignorant concerning what
they wrote: it is modern scholarship who are honored and paid
way too much for their bumbling carnal minded ignorance and
blindness.

By dakk:
As for metra, (μητρα), the matrix or
literal-physical womb of a woman, these are the only two places
it is found in the commonly received canon of the New Testament
writings:
Luke 2:23 W/H
23 καθως
γεγραπται
εν νομω
κυριου οτι
παν αρσεν
διανοιγον
μητραν
αγιον τω
κυριω
κληθησεται
Luke 2:23 ASV
23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that
openeth the womb shall be called holy [rather: "set-apart", from
the Torah context] to the Lord),
Romans 4:19 W/H
19 και μη
ασθενησας
τη πιστει
κατενοησεν
το εαυτου
σωμα [ηδη]
νενεκρωμεν_
9;ν
εκατονταετ_
1;ς
που υπαρχων
και την
νεκρωσιν
της μητρας
σαρρας
Romans 4:19 ASV
19 And without being weakened in faith he considered his own
body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old),
and the deadness of Sarah's womb;
Therefore, if the author of Luke obviously knows of this word
for the literal-physical womb of a woman, (for he employs it in
Luke 2:23), why then does the same author not use this word
anywhere in his infancy narrative? Moreover neither does

Matthew 1:18 ASV

together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

Moreover, from the OG LXX and Matthew, the Prophet Isaiah says
the same:
Matthew 1:22-23 ASV
22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

"εν γαστρι
εξει" = "shall have-hold-retain in gastri",
(the belly).
Moreover sullambano,
(συλλαμβανω),
is "to capture(seed)", and is used for "conception", but
specifically means to capture and retain seed. However, in the
sense of the Gospel narratives, (especially including Apocalypse
Yakob), the authors are speaking in the sense of retaining the
all-important everlasting Seed of the Logos-Word, as the Master
himself expounds in such parables as the Parable of the Sower
and similar parables concerning plant life production and
reproduction. For the same reason the various forms of tikto are
used throughout, (τικτω,
τεξη,
τεξεται, etc.), for
τικτω first and foremost concerns plant
life production and reproduction; and the Word of Elohim is
called the One whose name is Tzemach-Sprout-Branch, (Zec 3:8,
6:12, Jer 23:5, 33:15, Isa 4:2, and in the OG LXX-Septuagint
this word Tzemach is generally rendered Anatole in Greek,
(Rising Light)).
Luke 1:30-31 ASV
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast
found favor with God.
31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth
a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

"συλλημψη εν

Luke 1:41-42 ASV
41 And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of
Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with
the Holy Spirit;
42 and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said,

The Birth of Yohanan ~ Circa 3-2 BC/BCE
Luke 1:5-17 ASV
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judæa, a certain
priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a
wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and
they both were now well stricken in years.
8 Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest's office
before God in the order of his course,
9 according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to
enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at
the hour of incense.
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on
the right side of the altar of incense.
12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell
upon him.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy
supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a
son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice
at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall
drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the
Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn unto the
Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of
Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and
the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready
for the Lord a people prepared for him.
Luke 1:57-80 ASV
57 Now Elisabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be
delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had
magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to
circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias,
after the name of his father.
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be
called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is
called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, what he would have him
called.
63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His
name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed,
and he spake, blessing God.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all
these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country
of Judæa.
66 And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying,
What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with
him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and
prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited
and wrought redemption for his people,
69 And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of
his servant David
70 (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been
from of old),
71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that
hate us;
72 To show mercy towards our fathers, And to remember his holy
covenant;
73 The oath which he sware unto Abraham our father,
74 To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of
our enemies Should serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
76 Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most
High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make
ready his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the
remission of their sins,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring
from on high shall visit us,
79 To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of
death; To guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in
the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.
The Census of Quirinius ~ Circa 6-7 AD/CE
Luke 2:1-6 ASV
1 Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree
from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.
2 This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor
of Syria.
3 And all went to enrol themselves, every one to his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth, into Judæa, to the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;
5 to enrol himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being
great with child.
6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were
fulfilled that she should be delivered.
So the incubation period of the Seed of the Word in the soil of
the heart is ten days. And therefore it is said, "You shall have
tribulation ten days", (Rev 2:10), and in the Prophet Daniel,
"Prove your servants, I beseech you, ten days", (Dan 1:12), and
within those ten days are seventy weeks: for the "ten days" are
ten years, as in the example laid out above in the Gospel of
Luke which is no doubt correct. There is no way the author made
a mistake so blatant that he does not mean what he writes: he
means it, and the census of Quirinius is well documented and
attested in outside historical documents, including Josephus,
who says the taxation was the very reason for the uprising which
commenced about 7-8 AD/CE under Judas the Galilean.
