James 1:19 are we listening?
DIR By: guest24
Date: October 17, 2019, 7:28 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, I received a miracle that has been 15-20 years in the
making. We have been trying to get Dr.s to listen to what is
going on. Things got so bad that my quality of life is all but
non existent. Still, no one would listen, they just kept doing
what was making things worse and ignoring what I was saying.
Yesterday however, we had an appointment with a new Dr. and in
less than 5 mins. he not only diagnosed the problem, confirmed
what we had been saying the problem was, prescribed a solution,
but also told me it was time to start living again.
5 Minutes of listening will be changing my life for the rest of
my days not to mention how it will affect our family who has had
to change their lifestyle to accommodate the problems. Think
about that, 15-20 years of people not listening and in less than
5 mins, of listening my entire world changes. Is it any wonder
that we are instructed in scripture to be quick to listen and
slow to speak and slow to get angry?
James 1:19 King James Version (KJV)
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to
hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
So many days of my life are filled with people who ear bash me
because they so desperately want to be heard but no one really
listens and so they get ahold of me because I have learned the
importance of listening. So the question on the table is two
fold.
1. do we take God seriously when He commands us to listen? Why
or why not?
2. I am currently studying how we are trained in righteousness,
so how can we train ourselves to listen more?

My first thought is that we need to be like Jesus who had
compassion for people. If we have compassion for people then we
will want to listen to them and do what we can to help them.
Matt. 9:36 But when Yeshua saw the crowds, he felt pity for
them, for they were weary and wandering, like sheep without a
shepherd.
Matthew 14:14 When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He
had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Mark 6:34 When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He
had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a
shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.
Jesus also showed compassion for children and took the time to
listen to them and to pray for them and so should we.
Matt. 19:13And they brought children to him that he might lay
his hand upon them and pray, and his disciples rebuked them.
14But Yeshua said to them, "Let the children come to me and do
not forbid them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as
these." 15And he laid his hand upon them and went on from there.
Then there are the two greatest commandments. If we love the
LORD our God with all our heart, soul and mind and love our
neighbor as ourselves then we will certainly be motivated to
listen to them.
Matt. 22:34 And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced
the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. 35 One of
them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
36“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
37Jesus declared, “‘Love the LORD your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the
first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets
hang on these two commandments.”
So if we have compassion and love for people then we will listen
to them, pray for them and do what we can to help them. In that
way, we will be following Jesus' example. We need to endeavor to
be more like Jesus.
Also in order to listen we need to cultivate the fruit of the
spirit.
Gal. 5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness,
self-control: against such there is no law.

[/quote]well put and btw, I especially liked your words,
"compassion and love" since so many people think they are one
and the same thing.
I think that your right, cultivating the fruit of the spirit
helps to teach us to listen but I also think that we need to
learn to put others above ourselves (which is part of learning
to love) This world teaches us that we need to take care of
ourselves first, but what is listening? It's taking the time to
let the other person have a say, a value that the world tells us
is second place not first.
