Hey Backers!
Last week we showed you an overview of how our Creative
Director, Eric goes about building out the worlds with a
“sandbox” level he built specifically to show off some of the
custom tools that he and the art team use on a daily basis. A
bunch of you asked to see Eric’s original “normal speed” version
so for those who are really curious about his process this 90
minute(!) version is for you. A message from Eric about it: “I
would like to formally apologize for my utter lack of useful
narration. You’ve been warned!”
With that out of the way… Today we wanted to hop back in with a
couple of additional videos Eric has made for us, and really
start to dig into some of the details about Cyan’s custom tools,
how they work, and how they help the dev team build out the
various Ages that make up Cyan’s games! First up, Eric will be
digging into his workflow, and how he uses VR and our custom
“slab” tools to rapidly prototype environments.

In his second deep dive video, Eric will be talking about the
basics of building terrain. For our fans who are technical
artists already (or are aspiring and the sort to watch lots of
these sorts of breakdown videos on YouTube) some of this might
sound familiar already, but for those who have never “seen the
sausage getting made” before, we find this stuff mesmerizing,
and as Eric says in his video… a bit zen inducing!

Eric is planning on showing off even more of the technology the
team uses to make our games in upcoming videos. If there is
anything in particular that you’re curious about be sure to let
us know so we can pass those questions along for him to address!

Update #33: It’s 2021. Welcome To The Future!
Hello Backers!
Before we dive in, just a heads up that the last bit of news
involves new art and a minor reveal (not in any way a spoiler,
tho!), so if you're striving to have as little context as
possible prior to playing the game, you'll want to skip the last
item in this update.
We hope this first update of the new year finds you healthy and
happy. Here at Cyan we’re well rested after a break over the
holidays and have spent the first bit of 2021 looking at what's
coming down the road for us. This has meant lots of strategizing
and planning, which we’ll get into a bit more later on. First,
though, we wanted to let you know about something exciting:
we’ve hired another team member!
Introducing Abner
Abner Coimbre joins us as a senior engineer with prior
experience at Thekla Inc. (the studio that created “Braid,” and
“The Witness”) as well as NASA's Kennedy Space Center. (Many of
us at Cyan go nuts for space and NASA related stuff already, so
this is extra nerdy cool to us!) Abner will be drawing from his
expertise in systems programming to help with customizing the
game engine, porting efforts, mentoring, and will also be diving
into the world of VR programming.
Cyan, Firmament, and everyone who is a fan of what we do is
going to be a beneficiary of all the skills and talents he
brings to the table. We’re thrilled to have him on the team!
With the holidays (not to mention 2020!) in the rear view
mirror, and Myst for the Oculus Quest Platform out in the wild,
we’ve been updating the roadmap for Firmament in order to be
able to give you a better idea of when we’re targeting Firmament
for release...
Firmament’s Schedule
As you may recall over a number of updates we made last year, we
talked about how, as the team dug into the design, they
discovered the story they were eager to tell was even bigger
than anyone had in mind when the original Kickstarter pitch was
conceived. This has meant a certain amount of “going back to the
drawing board.” See Backer Update 25 and Backer Update 26 to
take a deeper look at those decisions.
Because this crucial design work was still going on, it wasn’t
possible (or advisable, anyway) at the time to start attaching
timeframes or release dates to anything… We’d already learned
our lesson with the Kickstarter campaign’s Estimated Delivery
Date of July 2020 having been too optimistic and were very
hesitant to simply “take a guess” at a new release date without
more information. That is the sort of decision which holds a
high likelihood of needing to make a change yet again at some
point later.
With all that said, we are now finally at a point in the
development process where we are able to talk with you about the
timeframe we have in mind. While we don’t have a specific
release date we can talk about yet, we can say we’re aiming at a
late 2022 release window for Firmament. (Cue fireworks/add
fireworks gif)
We understand that this is well beyond the initial estimated
release date for Firmament, and we know that many of you were
hoping for something sooner. We want you to know that this delay
in Firmament provides us extra time and funding that allows us
to tell the Firmament story the way it needs to be told - and,
as Rand has said before, it's one of the best stories we've ever
had. We hope you share our excitement at being able to do it
right.
We are grateful for your continued support! And we’re also
excited to continue bringing you an inside look at the
development of Firmament throughout this year. Speaking of
which...
