"The numbers seem to be based on just a few sources which are
fairly consistent where they can be compared:
The World Christian Encyclopedia (David A. Barrett; Oxford
University Press, 1982) apparently estimated almost 21,000
denominations, and the updated World Christian Encyclopedia
(Barrett, Kurian, Johnson; Oxford Univ Press, 2nd edition, 2001)
estimated at least 33,000. “Denomination” is defined as “an
organised christian group within a country”.
The Center for the Study of Global Christianity at
       Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary estimated 34,000
denominations in 2000, rising to an estimated 43,000 in 2012.
These numbers have exploded from 1,600 in the year 1900."

Catholic diocese donates $50,000 to three black churches damaged
       by arson attack
The Greater Union Baptist Church in St. Landry Parish, La. was
set ablaze on April, 2, 2019.
A Roman Catholic diocese donated an estimated $50,000 to three
historically African-American churches that were the victims of
a series of arson attacks in Louisiana.
Earlier this year, St. Mary’s Baptist Church of Port Barre,
Greater Union Baptist Church and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of
Opelousas were attacked by an arsonist.
Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel of the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette
presented the donation last Thursday to the pastors of the three
congregations at the site of the former St. Mary’s Baptist,
according to local newspaper The Acadiana Advocate.

"Where there are sins there are also divisions, schisms,
heresies and disputes. Where there is virtue, however, there
also are harmony and unity, from which arise the one heart and
       one soul of all believers."

I always have looked at denomination more as stacked from four
root groups. The first is based on Catholicism: The Catholic
Church, The Orthodox Church, the Coptics, and the Ethiopians.
The second is the original church that formed from the reformers
like Luther and Calvin. The third was the Anglicans and their
derivatives and final the fourth is everyone else.
All of this have their roots in the simple teachings of Jesus of
Nazareth before he was elevated to Christ. But that is how I
have looked at it as it made it easier to handle everything
       Academically.

From the first century Church, a split happened around 375 AD.
The split resulted in the group we now know as Baptist and their
derivatives (ana-Baptist, etc) that went underground until later
       in the first millennial AD.
The other part of the split went to the Catholic Church when
Constantine married the state to the Church. From the Catholic
brand of Christianity came all other denominations, sects and
non-denominations, Orthodox (both eastern and western) you speak
       of.
While the Protestant groups began in the 1500/1600s, all come
out of the Catholic Church and most all held onto many doctrines
       of the ROC.
Of course through the years there have been some splits within
these denominations; some splits that took a turn away from ROC
doctrines and some splits that stepped closer to the ROC...We
see this today in the Ecumenical churches including some like
Billy Graham's who has sided with the ROC.

I have never related the modern Baptist groups in our country
with the split that had a baptist church
from 375 CE. Just my viewpoint in looking at the baptist then
and now and do not seem enough relative sameness. But then I
am sure the same can be said fro all denomination currently.

       Hi, Mark.
I mistakingly spoke out of turn here (so to speak).. the split
came sometime in the 1st century to the middle of the 2nd
century...when the church was married to the state. Thus, the
Roman Church was born. (two emperors after Constantine)
I would suggest you pick up a copy of the book, "The Trail of
Blood" by Dr. J.M. Carrol. It is interesting reading.
