       JUSTIFIED BY WORKS
   DIR By: doug

[James 2:14 KJV] "What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a
man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?"
********* James isn't talking about salvation unto eternal life
       here, but rather deliverance.
[Genesis 15:5 KJV] "And he brought him forth abroad, and said,
Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to
number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be."
[Genesis 15:6 KJV] "And he believed in the LORD; and he counted
it to him for righteousness." ********** Abraham was justified
by faith, by believing God, not by any works, not by covenant.
[Genesis 17:1 KJV] "And when Abram was ninety years old and
nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I [am] the
Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect."
[Genesis 17:2 KJV] "And I will make my covenant between me and
thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly."
[Genesis 17:4 KJV] "As for me, behold, my covenant [is] with
thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations."
[Genesis 17:9 KJV] "And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep
my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their
       generations."
[Genesis 17:10 KJV] "This [is] my covenant, which ye shall keep,
between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child
       among you shall be circumcised."
[Genesis 17:11 KJV] "And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your
foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and
you." ********* God made covenant between himself and Abraham.
Under covenant Abraham now had to be obedient to keep the
covenant. Now for Abraham to be the father of many nations,
Abraham had to keep the covenant.
[Genesis 22:2 KJV] "And he said, Take now thy son, thine only
[son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of
Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the
mountains which I will tell thee of."
[Genesis 22:16 KJV] "And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the
LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not
withheld thy son, thine only [son]:"
[Genesis 22:17 KJV] "That in blessing I will bless thee, and in
multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven,
and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore; and thy seed
shall possess the gate of his enemies;"
[Genesis 22:18 KJV] "And in thy seed shall all the nations of
the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice."
********* Under their covenantal relationship, God blessed
Abraham as a result of his obedience.
[James 2:21 KJV] "Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?"
[James 2:22 KJV] "Seest thou how faith wrought with his works,
and by works was faith made perfect?"
[James 2:23 KJV] "And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for
righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God."
[James 2:24 KJV] "Ye see then how that by works a man is
justified, and not by faith only." ********* Abraham was
justified unto eternal life by believing God. Abraham was
justified by works when he obeyed God and was willing to offer
       up Isaac.
There is more than one meaning to justification; look at Psalm
51:4 where God is declared to be righteous in his judgment.
There is justification unto eternal life as when Abraham by
faith, believed God (Genesis 15:6). There is justification in
being righteous as when Abraham was justified by works (Genesis
       22:2 James 2:21).
Abraham's faith was made perfect/complete by his work of
obedience. The scripture that said Abraham believed God was
fulfilled by his believing God in offering up Isaac
