FIRSTBORN FIRSTBEGOTTEN WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE
By: doug Date: March 4, 2026, 12:29 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This will examine discrepancies between the Septuagint and
Sinaiticus in translating Hebrews 1:6. These are among the
oldest manuscripts and have influenced the newer Bibles. The
discrepancy revolves around their translation of first begotten
as firstborn.
I have included two translations of the Septuagint for veracity:
"Hebrews 1:6 in the Septuagint (LXX) states: "And again when he
brings in the firstborn into the inhabited world, he says, 'And
let all the angels of God do obeisance to him!'" (Deuteronomy
32:43). This verse emphasizes the worship of God by angels,
highlighting the significance of Jesus as the firstborn Son of
God."
"The Hebrews 1:6 verse from the Septuagint states: "And when He
again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, ‘And let all
the angels of God worship Him.'" This verse is often cited in
discussions about the superiority of Jesus over all things, as
it emphasizes the angels' obligation to worship Him."
For veracity I have included the text and a commentary:
"The English translation of Hebrews 1:6 from the Codex
Sinaiticus is: "And again, when God brings His firstborn into
the world, He says: Let all God's angels worship Him." "
"In Hebrews 1:6, the term "first begotten" (Greek:
"prōtotokos") refers to Jesus Christ as the firstborn of
God, emphasizing His unique position and authority. The
Sinaiticus manuscript translates this term as "firstborn"
(Greek: "prōtotokos") in Hebrews 1:6, maintaining the
original Greek text."
Both use firstborn instead of firstbegotten, which is seriously
incorrect, as will be seen.
Here is the KJV translation:
[Hebrews 1:6 KJV] "And again, when he bringeth in the
firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels
of God worship him."
I will examine verses pertaining to the use of the terms
firstbegotten and firstborn to determine their respective
meanings.
[Genesis 19:31 KJV] "And the firstborn said unto the younger,
Our father [is] old, and [there is] not a man in the earth to
come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:".
[Genesis 22:21 KJV] "Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and
Kemuel the father of Aram,"............. The firstborn is
exactly what it says, the first child born. The primary use of
firstborn is expressing chronological birth order,
The following verses require further consideration in regard to
the use of firstborn.
[Colossians 1:15 KJV] "Who is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of every creature:".................Jesus is said
here to be a similitude of being first in the birth order; the
rest of mankind followed him in birth order and position, The
first born in the old testament received double of the
inheritance and designated position as head of the family.
[Colossians 1:18 KJV] "And he is the head of the body, the
church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that
in all [things] he might have the
preeminence."....................Christ was the first in the
birth order similitude to receive a resurrected body. Others
were raised from the dead but not resurrected.
[Hebrews 11:28 KJV] "Through faith he kept the passover, and the
sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should
touch them.".....................God smote the firstborn of
Egypt
[Hebrews 12:23 KJV] "To the general assembly and church of the
firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of
all, and to the spirits of just men made
perfect,"...................This verse is saying Christ, like
Israel, was God's firstborn Son.............. [Exodus 4:22 KJV]
"And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel
[is] my son, [even] my firstborn:"..............this again
conveys first born birth order.
Outside of Hebrews 1:6 this is the sole use of firstbegotten:
[Revelation 1:5 KJV] "And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the
faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the
prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and
washed us from our sins in his own blood,"....................I
think Hebrews 1:6 can be beneficial in interpreting Revelation
1:5.....................[Hebrews 1:6 KJV] "And again, when he
bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let
all the angels of God worship him."................This verse
expresses that the firstbegotten is to be worshiped. Both of
these verses are speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ, the
firstbegotten. The Lord Jesus Christ is the firstbegotten
brought into the world....................[John 1:14 KJV] "And
the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of
grace and truth."
[1 John 4:9 KJV] "In this was manifested the love of God toward
us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world,
that we might live through him."
Firstborn conveys the chronological birth order, while
firstbegotten conveys the deity of Christ. Firstbegotten
expresses Christ's deity while firstborn doesn't fully do so.
Technically, if Christ is the firstborn, he could have brothers,
would they be Sons of God as well? Strongs Greek word for
firstbegotten is also translated as firstborn; the KJV
translators chose to translate it as firstbegotten in Hebrews
1:6.
