DOES THIS VERSE CONTRADICT PAUL SAYING A WOMEN CAN'T SPEAK IN TH
       E CHURCH?
By: doug Date: January 23, 2026, 11:42 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
[1 Corinthians 11:5 KJV] "But every woman that prayeth or
prophesieth with [her] head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for
that is even all one as if she were shaven.".........This
passage is difficult, and I don't say I have the ability to
explain it. I will only present scripture that I think pertains
to this passage and are pertinent for consideration. How can
Paul say a women can prophesy in the church if she has to be
silent?.......[1 Corinthians 14:34 KJV] "Let your women keep
silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to
speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also
       saith the law.".
There were no commandments specifically addressing women's head
coverings that I could find. We can find a few verses that
verify head coverings were a practice among women...........
[Genesis 24:65 KJV] "For she [had] said unto the servant, What
man [is] this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the
servant [had] said, It [is] my master: therefore she took a
       vail, and covered herself."
[Song of Songs 5:7 KJV] "The watchmen that went about the city
found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the
walls took away my veil from me."
[Numbers 5:18 KJV] "And the priest shall set the woman before
the LORD, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of
memorial in her hands, which [is] the jealousy offering: and the
priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the
curse:"........head coverings were common in the old testament.
I couldn't find any verses that could shed light on this
verse....[1 Corinthians 11:6 KJV] "For if the woman be not
covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman
to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.".......This is the
only related verse I could find........[Deuteronomy 21:11 KJV]
"And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a
desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife;"
[Deuteronomy 21:12 KJV] "Then thou shalt bring her home to thine
house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her
nails;"........were captive women uncovered and had to be shorn?
There were women in the old testament who prophesized, who spoke
the word of the Lord........ [2 Kings 22:14 KJV] "So Hilkiah the
priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went
unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of
Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she
dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her."
[2 Kings 22:15 KJV] "And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,"
[2 Kings 22:16 KJV] "Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring
evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, [even]
all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:"
There was a prophetess during the earthly ministry of Christ
amid the twelve apostles......[Luke 2:36 KJV] "And there was one
Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of
Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband
       seven years from her virginity;"
[Luke 2:37 KJV] "And she [was] a widow of about fourscore and
four years, which departed not from the temple, but served [God]
with fastings and prayers night and day."
The Corinthian church was a mixture of the little flock
believing remnant and the body of Christ. The little flock may
be the ones under consideration here. The little flock did not
have to abandon the law and were influenced by their traditions.
This determination of mine can be supported by this
       verse.........[1 Corinthians 10:1 KJV] "Moreover, brethren, I
would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers
were under the cloud, and all passed through the
sea;"........Paul was Jewish and identifies himself with the
"fathers" which is restricted to the Jews only. He could very
well be dealing with Jewish situations including head coverings.
[1 Corinthians 11:16 KJV] "But if any man seem to be
contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of
God.".......I think Paul may have been addressing concerns from
the little flock over head coverings, but Paul was saying that
in the body of Christ, they had no such customs. Paul never said
that he was discussing women prophesying in the church, the body
       of Christ.
