A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER IS ABOUT
By: doug Date: November 17, 2025, 1:21 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The parable of the sower taught by the Lord Jesus Christ will be
examined in a new light. I will attempt to show how this parable
pictures the threefold rejection of Israel to repent and receive
their promised earthly kingdom, and upon their unbelief, the
turn to the Gentiles. In the kingdom, Jesus will reign on
David's throne from Jerusalem, believing Israel will reign with
him for a thousand years, and the believing remnant of Israel
will be a blessing to bring Gentiles to the Lord.
JESUS SPEAKS THE PARABLE TO THE MULTITUDE
[Luke 8:4 KJV]
"And when much people were gathered together, and were come to
him out of every city, he spake by a parable:"
[Matthew 13:2 KJV]
"And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that
he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on
the shore."
[Mark 4:1 KJV]
"And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was
gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a
ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea
on the land."
[Mark 4:2 KJV]
"And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them
in his doctrine,"
THE SEED FELL BY THE WAYSIDE
[Luke 8:5 KJV]
"A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by
the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air
devoured it."
[Matthew 13:3 KJV]
"And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold,
a sower went forth to sow;"
[Matthew 13:4 KJV]
"And when he sowed, some [seeds] fell by the way side, and the
fowls came and devoured them up:"
[Mark 4:3 KJV]
"Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:"
[Mark 4:4 KJV]
"And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side,
and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up."
THE EXPLANATION
[Luke 8:11 KJV]
"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God."
[Luke 8:12 KJV]
"Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the
devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they
should believe and be saved."
[Matthew 13:19 KJV]
"When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth
[it] not, then cometh the wicked [one], and catcheth away that
which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by
the way side."
Jesus was teaching about the kingdom of God, the prophetic
earthy kingdom in which Christ will reign along with believing
Israel. The word of the kingdom is the gospel of the kingdom.
[Matthew 4:23 KJV]
"And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,
and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease among the people."
[Mark 4:15 KJV]
"And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but
when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away
the word that was sown in their hearts."
THE ROCK
[Luke 8:6 KJV]
"And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it
withered away, because it lacked moisture."
[Matthew 13:5 KJV]
"Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and
forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of
earth:"
[Matthew 13:6 KJV]
"And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they
had no root, they withered away."
[Mark 4:5 KJV]
"And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and
immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:"
[Mark 4:6 KJV]
"But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no
root, it withered away."
THE EXPLANATION
[Luke 8:13 KJV]
"They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the
word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while
believe, and in time of temptation fall away."
[Matthew 13:20 KJV]
"But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he
that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;"
[Matthew 13:21 KJV]
"Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for
when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by
and by he is offended."
[Mark 4:16 KJV]
"And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground;
who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with
gladness;"
[Mark 4:17 KJV]
"And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time:
afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's
sake, immediately they are offended."
THE THORNS
[Luke 8:7 KJV]
"And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it,
and choked it."
[Matthew 13:7 KJV]
"And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and
choked them:"
[Mark 4:7 KJV]
"And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked
it, and it yielded no fruit."
THE EXPLANATION
[Luke 8:14 KJV]
"And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they
have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and
pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection."
[Matthew 13:22 KJV]
"He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth
the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of
riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful."
[Mark 4:18 KJV]
"And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear
the word,"
[Mark 4:19 KJV]
"And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches,
and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and
it becometh unfruitful."
THE GOOD GROUND
[Luke 8:8 KJV]
"And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an
hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He
that hath ears to hear, let him hear."
[Matthew 13:8 KJV]
"But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some
an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold."
[Mark 4:8 KJV]
"And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang
up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some
sixty, and some an hundred."
THE EXPLANATION
[Luke 8:15 KJV]
"But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and
good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth
fruit with patience."
[Matthew 13:23 KJV]
"But he that received seed into the good ground is he that
heareth the word, and understandeth [it]; which also beareth
fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some
thirty."
[Mark 4:20 KJV]
"And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear
the word, and receive [it], and bring forth fruit, some
thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred."
THE KINGDOM OFFERED
The Lord Jesus preached that the kingdom was at hand. Israel as
a nation had to repent and believe. The parable of the sower
details how Israel failed to repent.
Israel had to repent and believe on Christ, become fruitful, and
receive their kingdom. There is much emphasis on being righteous
and fruitful to enter the kingdom.
[Matthew 3:10 KJV]
"And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees:
therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn
down, and cast into the fire."
THREE CALLS TO REPENTANCE AND THREE WARNINGS
The parable of the sower expressed unbelieving and unfruitful
Israel's rejection of the kingdom three times; by the wayside,
on the rock, and among thorns.
There are three instances when the nation of Israel rejected
their kingdom offer as well as three times when Paul told them
their rejection would result in offering salvation to the
Gentiles instead.
THE FIRST FAILURE TO REPENT
[Act 2:38 KJV]
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and
ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
THE SECOND FAILURE TO REPENT
[Acts 3:19 KJV]
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be
blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the
presence of the Lord;"
THE THIRD FAILURE TO REPENT
[Acts 8:22 KJV]
"Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if
perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee."
PAUL'S FIRST WARNING
[Acts 13:46 KJV]
"Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary
that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but
seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of
everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles."
Here is the first pronunciation to Israel that that God would
turn to the Gentiles.
PAUL'S SECOND WARNING
[Acts 18:6 KJV]
"And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook
[his] raiment, and said unto them, Your blood [be] upon your own
heads; I [am] clean: from henceforth I will go unto the
Gentiles."
PAUL'S THIRD WARNING
[Acts 28:28 KJV]
"Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is
sent unto the Gentiles, and [that] they will hear it."
