Winter 2010

Before we'd even had a chance to ask the landlord if we could rent
the fields next to our house (now they were no longer being used),
my wife started with the "If you build it they will come" approach.

And so that's how we (royal we, because it was mainly me) found
ourselves out in the cold winter of 2010 knocking down dry stone
walls to provide access* to a field we didn't yet have permission
to use, cutting back barbed wire and wire fencing, building a ramp
up from the field to the other side of the wall, rebuilding dry
stone walls either side of the ramp, fixing gate posts and a farm
gate, clearing out a field shelter from years of matted muck and
poo because the previous users had obviously never bothered, and
finally clearing out and building a stable inside one of the old
farm buildings from left over material from some other farm
buildings / stables (that were in far too bad a state for us to
just use; the were ultimately pulled down and two years later is
providing this winters firewood). It was freezing and mostly dark.
Absolutely the worst time of the year to be doing something like
this.

But you know, if you build it, they will come.


* You could access the field from the farm, but at the time this
meant a long walk round the farm to get to a gate the wrong side of
the field.  What we effectively did was make it so our back garden
opened up onto the field.
