NAME
     se - screen editor

SYNOPSIS
     se [ +N | +$ ] [ file ]

DESCRIPTION
Se is a full-screen text editor. It shows as much of the file as fits, a
status line at the bottom, and ~ on the rows past the end. The arrow
keys move the cursor, typing inserts, and the control keys below do
everything else. There are no modes: what you type goes into the file.

It is the deck's default editor, and the one gopher(1) opens when you
compose a post. Its habits are those of the small screen editors of the
1980s rather than of vi(1); if you have used pico or nano you already
     know it.

With +N the cursor starts at the end of line N; with +$ at the end of the
last line. This is for the benefit of programs that call se to edit
     something they prepared.

KEYS
     arrow keys
Move the cursor. Left at the start of a line wraps to the end of
the previous one; right at the end wraps to the next.

     home end
Start and end of the line.

     pgup pgdn
          A screenful up or down.

     enter
Split the line at the cursor.

     backspace
Delete the character before the cursor, joining lines when at the
          start of one.

     delete
Delete the character under the cursor, joining with the next line
when at the end of one.

     ctrl-s
Write the file. The byte count appears in the status line.

     ctrl-q
Quit. With unsaved changes this warns instead; press it again to
          leave anyway.

     ctrl-k
Kill the current line, holding it in the kill buffer.

     ctrl-u
Insert the killed line at the cursor. The kill buffer holds one
line and survives repeated ctrl-u, so this doubles as a way to
          duplicate a line.

     ctrl-g
Print the key summary in the status line.

     ctrl-l
          Redraw the screen.

     ctrl-z
Suspend and return to the shell. fg resumes with the buffer and
          cursor as you left them.

EXAMPLES
Edit a file, creating it if it is not there:

          se /n/local/notes/today

Start at the end of the file, ready to add to it:

          se +$ /n/local/notes/today

FILES
     /env/editor
The editor other programs invoke. It is se unless you set it to vi,
          ed, sam or sed.

SEE ALSO
     vi(1), ed(1), sam(1), gopher(1)

NOTES
The buffer holds at most 4096 lines of at most 256 characters, in PSRAM.
Lines longer than that are split when the file is read.

There is no search, no undo and no cut of anything smaller than a line.
For those, use vi(1) or sam(1).

BUGS
Lines wider than the screen are drawn truncated, not wrapped or scrolled
sideways; the text is intact in the file but the tail of a long line
     cannot be seen.
