NAME
gopher - browse and write gopherspace

SYNOPSIS
     gopher [url]
     gopher host [selector [port]]

DESCRIPTION
Gopher is a full-screen client for the gopher protocol. A page is either
a menu -- a numbered list of items, each of which leads somewhere -- or a
text file. You move a cursor down the menu and press Enter. That is the
whole model, and it is why gopher fits a small screen and a slow link
better than anything that came after it.

With no argument it opens the FRST phlog at frstcomputer.com. An
argument may be a URL (gopher://host/1/path), a host with a path
(host/path), or a host, selector and port as separate words.

Each menu item carries a three-letter tag saying what it is: TXT a text
file, DIR another menu, QRY a search, EDT something you can write to, IMG
GIF BIN files to be downloaded, PBM a bitmap, and TEL a telnet service,
which is handed to con(1) inside vt(1) and comes back here when you hang
up. Choosing a search prompts for a term at the bottom of the screen.

Writing works too. An EDT item is a document the server will accept.
Enter on one fetches the template, asks for a subject if the template has
headers, opens the body in your editor -- $editor if it is set to se, vi,
ed, sam or sed, and se otherwise -- and submits the result when you leave
the editor. Nothing is held open while you type. If the board rejects
the post the reason appears on the status line and the draft is kept.

If the board you are attuned to is the host being browsed, the client
logs in by itself, using the identity the deck already holds, and posts
under it; L does the same by hand. Otherwise you browse and post as a
     guest.

/net/tcp must be available; run attune(1) if the deck is not already
     connected.

KEYS
     In a menu:

j k Move the cursor to the next or previous item.

     up down
Scroll the page by one row without moving the cursor.

     1 2 3 ...
Type an item's number to jump straight to it.

     space PgDn
Next screenful. PgUp goes back one.

     enter
          Open the selected item.

     esc h left
Back to the previous page; at the first page, leave.

q Leave. ctrl-C does the same.

     ctrl-Z
Suspend, leaving the page where it is; fg resumes it.

D Download the selected item to /n/local/downloads whatever its type --
useful for a bitmap Enter would rather display.

b Open the bookmark list. In it, a number opens that bookmark,
dnumber deletes it, and Esc cancels.

B Bookmark the selected item, or the current page if nothing is
          selected.

g Go to a URL typed at the bottom of the screen.

L Log in to the attuned board and browse as yourself.

     In a text page:

j k Down or up one line; the arrow keys do the same.

     space PgDn
Next screenful. b and PgUp go back one.

     esc h left q
Back to the previous page; at the first page, leave.

          Where downloaded files are written.

NOTES
Text is folded to the deck's character set on the way in: accented
letters lose their accents, typographic quotes and dashes become the
plain ones, and emoji are dropped.

Inline bitmaps are a FRST extension to the protocol and only appear on
servers that emit them. A page with a handful of them fetches them and
draws them in place; a page full of them leaves each as a caption you
open with Enter, so a gallery does not turn into a fetch storm.
