NAME
ftp - move files to and from a file server

SYNOPSIS
     ftp host [port]

DESCRIPTION
Ftp opens a control connection to host (port 21 unless you say
     otherwise), logs in, and prompts:

          ftp>

Login asks for a name, offering the host as the prompt; press Enter and
it sends anonymous. If the server wants a password it is read without
echo -- which keeps it off the display, though the wire itself is plain.
After a successful login the transfer type is set to binary, because this
     is a deck that carries firmware and images rather than a line printer;
     ascii switches back.

Every listing and every transfer opens a second connection to the server,
dialed outwards in passive mode. Downloads that are not given a local
     name land in /n/local/downloads.

/net/tcp must be available; run attune(1) if the deck is not already
     connected.

COMMANDS
     ls [path]
List the remote directory. dir does the same.

     cd path
          Change the remote directory.

     cdup Go up one.

     pwd Print the remote directory.

     get file [local]
Download file. Without local it is saved in /n/local/downloads
          under its own name.

     put local [name]
Upload local, under its own name unless name is given.

     ascii, binary
Set the transfer type. bin is accepted for binary.

     user name
Log in again, as someone else or after a timeout.

     quote cmd ...
Send a raw FTP command; the rest of the line goes verbatim. Use it
for whatever this client does not wrap.

help Print the command list. ? does the same.

quit Close the connection and leave. bye and exit do the same.

EXAMPLES
Fetch a file from a public archive:

          ftp ftp.example.org
          Name (ftp.example.org):
          ftp> cd pub/docs
          ftp> ls
          ftp> get rfc1436.txt
          ftp> quit

     Put a file somewhere useful:

          ftp> put /n/local/notes/plan plan.txt

Ask for something this client has no word for:

          ftp> quote SITE HELP

FILES
     /n/local/downloads
Where a download without a local name is written.

     /net/tcp
The network, borrowed from the crystal or served locally.

SEE ALSO
     attune(1), con(1), nc(1), gopher(1)

BUGS
Passive mode only. A client on this deck cannot listen, so the old
active mode -- where the server dials back -- is not available. It has
been the wrong default everywhere for thirty years anyway.

Nothing here is encrypted, including the password.
