NAME
finger - ask a host who is there

SYNOPSIS
     finger [user@]host

DESCRIPTION
Finger asks host about user and prints the reply. With a bare host and
no user it asks for the list of everyone logged in. The answer is
whatever the far end feels like saying: on a shell machine, a name, an
idle time, and the contents of the user's plan file; on a board, often a
     hand-written notice.

The protocol is RFC 1288 and older than that in practice -- one line of
query, then text back until the connection closes, on port 79. It is
still a good way to find out whether anyone is around before you dial in.

/net/tcp must be available; run attune(1) if the deck is not already
     connected.

EXAMPLES
     Who is logged in:

          finger telehack.com

     One person in particular:

          finger jon@telehack.com

NOTES
There is no way to refuse an answer you did not want: whatever the host
sends is printed. Pipe it through p(1) if you expect a long one.
