I think the first tape player in the house was ... Sanyo, maybe? Quite late in the game. 06:12:57 ok 06:13:21 We had a succession of record players, though. 06:13:39 The only brand there I remember was RCA, but I'm pretty sure we had an older German brand before that. 06:13:47 (Maybe Grundig? I was averse to trying it but found it to be quite easy with enough flux, a decent eye loupe and patience. 11:47:28 --- join: Anarch (~olaf@73.53.61.168) joined #forth 11:48:32 --- quit: malyn (Ping timeout: 246 seconds) 11:48:36 I would recommend pre-tinning one corner pad. Placing the part and adjusting with tweezers, solder down the single pin. You can reheat it if need be and adjust the position. Check with the loupe that all pins and pads line up. 11:49:00 backer: yeb slathering the work area with flux 11:49:01 Most importantly, don't let the solder spread to any other pins until you have it lined up just right. Doing so will make it tough to reposition. 11:49:06 backer: works. 11:49:20 --- nick: SROtbJVIt -> malyn 11:49:36 Then, when you are satisfied with the position, solder down the opposite corner. Check the alignment again (also part should be flat and not raised on any side). 11:50:12 At that point, you can solder the remaining pins by dragging the iron slowly across the pins, letting the flux heat up while you gradually feed small amounts of solder. 11:50:49 Don't panic if you bridge pins - with more flux and wick as a last resort, you can draw solder away from the bridge... 11:52:29 also check with the loupe that the small, curved area under the right angle bend of each pin has a small amount of solder... a picture or video would help describe this... 11:53:49 I wish I had a way to keep flux off the hands... I don't like working with gloves and the stuff seems to get everywhere. It's tough to wash off, too. 11:59:06 This video shows several different techniques using different tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uiroWBkdFY 12:00:44 BTW, that solder behind the curved part of the pin is called the heel fillet (2:53 in video) 12:03:42 --- join: DocPlatypus (~skquinn@50.162.13.180) joined #forth 12:06:45 and since I'm blathering away here... there's a cool technique for desoldering SMT by hand using thin wire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlSY1uaw0GA 12:39:27 --- quit: Zarutian (Quit: Zarutian) 14:27:43 --- join: joneshf-laptop (~joneshf@campus-055-132.ucdavis.edu) joined #forth 15:10:02 --- quit: nighty^ (Quit: Disappears in a puff of smoke) 15:42:40 --- quit: Mat3 (Quit: Verlassend) 15:46:41 --- join: malyn_ (~malyn@unaffiliated/malyn) joined #forth 15:49:08 --- quit: joneshf-laptop (Remote host closed the connection) 16:12:43 --- quit: true-grue_ (Read error: Connection reset by peer) 16:51:03 --- join: Zarutian (~zarutian@168-110-22-46.fiber.hringdu.is) joined #forth 16:53:36 backer: flux of the hands: you dont need gloves but you must then follow the iron rule of only touching the parts with tweazers.
