It seemed like a thin layer of ice, maybe 1/4 inch, formed on top of the water and then the water under that just disappeared. It would have shown here if it had expanded higher than the depth of the new water had been.. Maybe the water got absorbed into the ice it was sitting on which possibly had deteriorated a bit and had air bubbles in it..
