Telnet is around forever. The first thing I ever did when I got on the internet was use a telnet interface to IRC.

I remember that I could telnet to sites like cduniverse.com and you could order CDs online, putting in your credit card over clear text. I never did that because I was in the UK and these sites were in the US.

There used to be a lot of cool telnet sites around, but they're few and far between these days. Any I find I put under the Telnet Gateways Door section.

For MUDS, MUSH, MOO, Talkers, and the like, there's the Ultimate MUD Connector which will let you connect to over 500 active games - I've not run a check run in a while so I should probably do that.
