Yes.. it is a mess.  I would get calls from the mother (my  
aunt) and sometimes she's pratically in tears after telling me  
what the daughter says to her.  It sounds like elder abuse to  
me.

The particular student boarder situation is not like that;  
however, recently the student's mother came to visit [not sure  
what country they are from - but I think the Philippines] ..and  
not sure where the mother is staying - but hope NOT in the  
student's room!

There is no point asking my aunt because her daughter tells her  
it's none of her business.
