I remember having to rebuild my Linux kernel to support new drivers - But I
haven't had to do that in many years.  I thought they had implemented another
way to load hardware drivers in Linux by now which doesn't require rebuilding
the kernel.

Have you tried Ubuntu's 'Additional Drivers' applet?:
