+++ Tuesday 8 July 2025 +++ OCC25 More preparations ======================= Recently I wrote about installing a Telnet server [1], and a FTP server [2] in a FreeBSD jail. Old operating systems can't use ssh and scp, this way they can still communicate with systems in my network, and fetch and push files. After this, I did some other prep-work: Email ----- I setup a new email account on the IMAP server, running in the home network. Clients can access this account without the use of SSL/TLS. The email client can also connect to my SMTP server, making it possible to send mail. With this in place, a system running an old operating system can communicate with the outside world. Using the Apple email client on the old PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.3.9, I subscribed to the OCC mailing list that Tekk was so kind to create. IRC --- X-Chat Aqua was already configured to chat over Libera Chat. After resetting the password, I could connect to the #oldcomputerchallenge channel :) To prevent future embarrassments like this, I added the new password to pass. Mouse and keyboard ------------------ Both the mouse and the keyboard could use some cleaning. With the help of isopropyl alcohol and a rag, there are now fully operational. What is left, is to clear out my desk on the attic. Only a few days left ...
