4, actually. At least that's supposed to be the standard maximum size
for a Usenet .sig. Here in alt.ascii-art longer .sigs are of course
allowed. And not many people would bother complaining about a few extra
lines these days, it's not that much compared to many other wastes of
bandwidth.

A good rule of thumb is that if your .sig has more lines than you've
written in the post (quotes don't count) then it's clearly too long.

And since I got started advocating about proper .sig usage, don't forget
the .sigdashes. Two hyphens and a space ("-- ") on the line before the
.sig are the standard way to indicate where it begins.

(I think this too is in the FAQ. If it isn't it should be. I'll stop
here, not enough ascii art in this thread..)
