As a follow up to my first post I checked Joshua Bell's original
illustrations of the results of his program and I see that his CW90
and CCW90 images are distorted as he says they will be but he seems
to have retained the same characters for his mapping:

Note: None of these utilities rescale images or attempt to do
anything beyond the scope of a single character cell. So rotated
images are almost always going to be extremely distorted.
