You could sell items on [6]eBay or [7]Etsy, start a blog, manage a small business or even freelance services such as coding, artwork, video creation on [8]Fiverr or [9]Upwork. My Side-hustle is [10]YouTube. Since 2007 I've been making content about [11]retro video games, computers, consoles and technology. But I only starting getting serious about it in 2016. Back then I had around 100 subscribers. In June of 2017, I had 7000 subscribers. In October of 2018, I passed 100,000 subscribers and my most popular video has been viewed over 1.8 million times. I have over 14 million views across all my videos and have over 70 million minutes of watch time. That's over 133 years. Being a content creator on YouTube has taught me about video editing, production, cameras, lighting and audio production. None of which I had skills in. It taught me to face my fear of being in front of a camera and went from a stuttering um'er and ah'er to being confident in my speaking. I've spoken at conferences and in-front of large audiences. It's taught me about being an influencer and a leader with thousands of people following you and looking up to you. And then there is the social media and digital marketing side. With YouTube, the right SEO - keywords, thumbnails and tags in your content - is paramount to your growth. You do want to rank higher in a search over the competition don't you? I learned all about this too. None of this was easy. I failed over and over for years, my first 50 videos were terrible. I made zero dollars on the platform and no one watched. I didn't care. It was fun. I still have them online as a reminder of how far I've come. I don't recommend anyone watch them. In early 2016 one of my videos was watched by 100 people. That's more than an average movie theater. I was encouraged by this and committed to doing better, up my production quality and above all - entertain. These days I average around 100,000 views per video. That the equivalent of selling out the largest sporting stadiums in the world. I am a one man show. There is no editor, film crew or producer helping me. Just me. In my home office with my camera and gear. I release videos weekly. I've been told that I would not succeed because the YouTube algorithm pushes creators to upload daily. I have proved them wrong. Weekly videos means it does not interfere with my full-time career and I have plenty of family time. Some people burn out on YouTube chasing ad-revenue. I'm here for as long as possible. Earlier this week I was awarded the coveted Silver Play Button for 100,000 subscribers. As of this post I [12]am already at 130,000. My next goal is a [13]million. Will I get there? Who knows - but I'm going to give it 110%. Maybe I'll make another post here when I hit that milestone. [:0] So. What's your Side Hustle?
